Depends on what you are after. SONG OF ARTHUR AND MERLIN is very fine. My own SONG OF THE SPLINTERED LANDS offers three different campaigns (linked games) in various settings. Those two are MY favorites, but hopefully others will opine too.

The core rulebook, Song of Blades & Heroes, is all you need to get started playing with any fantasy miniatures.

The other books are useful once you are ready to expand beyond the core rulebook.

Both SAM and SSL mentioned above include the core rules, so you may actually be better off getting one of them and having a culture to play in. I'm not sure if the core rules are now included in ALL the supplements, but I know for sure they are in those two.

For generic fantasy just get Song Of Blades And Heroes. I grabbed Blades And Heroes, Gold And Darkness, and Wind And Water. I have several of the others but have only used the first book with a fee bits of the others. An outstanding set.

The rules are very adaptive. I have the stand-alone Flashing Steel and use it for larger, broader scope games than intended, but used it to "boot strap" Japanese and Bronze Age skirmish.

Suggest you join the Yahoo group, which is very active.

See you there!

SONG OF THE SPLINTERED LANDS is a great place to start for Fantasy or "ancients/medievals" if you ignore the anamorphism. Plus it has one of the best campaigns i've read. If only I had the minis to play the whole thing.

FLASHING STEEL if you want to add black powder and "characters"

FLYING LEAD for cartridge firearms and later.

I have most of the sets, and freely mix the parts from each.

Thanks, CHUK. Yes, one can easily play any of the three campaigns with a completely different mix of miniatures.

SONG OF FUR AND BUTTONS also contains the Core rules. I think most of the setting specific supplements have core rules as well.

Splintered Lands is also a favourite of mine.
