The Scourge had been surprised by the sudden and violent nature of the PHR attack. It was unknown whether the PHR would join the fighting taking place across the capital city of the province of Atros.

Their force had huddled together at their beahchead attacking neither UCM nor Scourge forces and it was disputed on both sides what they were doing there.

The answer had come with lightning decisiveness.

Now Nu'al Kor was trapped 14 blocks behind enemy lines, such as they were.

The situation in the city was still pretty fluid and his scouts reported that there might be a way through the cyborg forces.

With few options remaining he pushed ahead.

The Scourge column starts to enter the table, the minders have already flown ahead to set up and anti-aircraft cordon.

Things were looking good, the disruption caused by the intense electronic warfare made navigation somewhat difficult but Nu'al Kor was relying on hardwired maps and following the river. There was no movement in the area and sensor detected no life or heat.

Then a rapidly moving object dropped through the cloud cover and streaked towards the retreating column.

The weapons blazed on the interceptor and hunks of metal were ripped off of the desolator. The force of the attacked skewed the airborne chariot sideways as the Athena interceptor screamed past in a streak of gray, red and blue.

Following up on that one of the tough, slow moving drop ships that the PHR employ moved in the Athena's wake. They landed four walkers.

The Scourge commander ordered one of his battle groups to land to destroy the enemy attempting to cut off their escape route and sent his infantry to take positions in the building across the street from the landed enemy.

With plasma blasting down on them the PHR battlegroup anxiously hoped for reinforcements as their railguns blasted away at building and fast moving skimmers, the Phobos class walkers were firing up at the Desolator chipping away at the heavily built aircraft.

The valley of death

The Desolator saw more of the PHR dropships moving towards him dead ahead and he moved towards the enemy now fighting off infantry who had used an underground tunnel to surround them and tanks that dodged and weaved even in the concrete. canyon created by the buildings on either side.

Looks bad for the Scourge – that's a lot of AA staring at that poor Desolator. Looks like the plasma hoses on the Marauders are getting a workout too.

Never dawned on me before – the Desolator's AoE zap takes the "fast skimmer" to-hit penalty, doesn't it? You can shove it right into a cluster of mixed units like in the third photo and only hit your own stuff on 5+ – not too bad. Of course, if the walkers stay on their feet after all's said and done, you're probably a dead squid, but that's the chance you take, right?

Their dropships poured fire into the buildings where the Scourge infantry were firing down with their plasma guns on the trapped walkers.

Then the Desolator moved behind them and a pulse of arcing electricity engulfed the entire street. The electricity coursed through everything in its path. One of the Scourge skimmers' lights went out and it crashed to the street rolling twice before coming to a complete smoking halt.

The pilots of the PHR walkers wondered where those reinforcements were. The Phobos walkers lined up perfect shot after their systems recovered from the electrical storm and with their AA guns blazing they poured fire up into the Desolator. Explosions ripped along the vehicle as it limped momentarily out of sight behind a skyscraper.

Plasma blasts lit up the Phobos walkers from the two remaining Scourge skimmers and one went down, the other badly damaged.

The other Scourge battle group had its hands full too. The minders had engaged a drop ship carrying two heavy walkers and had nearly brought it down before they themselves were engaged by two Menchit anti-personel walkers and were almost wiped out themselves.

The respite allowed the Heavy walkers to land safely and start to engage the Scourge skimmers that were streaking towards the newly arrived PHR infantry that stood in the path of the crippled desolator.

They fired on the Phobos walkers that made up the rest of the Menchit's battle group, their dropships joining in with their plasma nozzles and the two AA walkers melted under the stream of superheated gas.

The Athena streaked in now for another go at the desolator. At this point the craft was having trouble even staying aloft, cords and hoses were visibly hanging out of it even to the troops on the ground.

As it streaked in the Scourge infantry interrupted their fire at the walkers on the ground pumping the air full of plasma bursts to little effect.

Just then, though, the air was rent apart around the Athena and system after system went off line and the plane caught fire and soon exploded, crashing into the street and leaving a massive crater where its speed and mass tore through the asphalt and vegetation that had grown there.

The PHR command group set down to block the path of the Scourge skimmers and between them and the heavy walkers the threat to the Scourge infantry and scout walkers was eliminated.

The crippled desolator continued to advance as the Scourge dropships desperately tried to eliminate the scout walkers and their AA capability.

The infantry concentrated their fire on the last damaged Phobos walker but all of them were unable to damage the walker and it moved to sight the Desolator now charging up for a destructive blast at the PHR infantry.

The burst of rapid rail rifle fire told and the Desolator exploded raining down metal and a salty fluid down on the infantry below.

Now it was time to mop up the infantry in the building and Nu'al Kor's column would be erased from the list of things the PHR had to worry about in Atros City.

The Desolator is a pretty tough cookie. In this mission the PHR were just trying to kill it, that was their only mission objective.

They did it but only by the shortest. There were 29 infantry shots on the last of the Phobos walkers and by rights it should have been dead, but it lucked out and survived. Had it been eliminated there was almost nothing left near the Desolator to inflict the last hit on it. All that was left that had any AA capabilities were the infantry and the scout walkers and they weren't going to last long against 5 Marauders.

The infantry might have had some chance but I bet the Desolator could have switched table sides pretty quickly and escaped them.

We used the cards for the first time this game. They were useful, the desolator was able to heal two DPs thanks to them. Nu'al Kor was a level 3 commander. The PHR, already vastly superior in points, had no commander.

How were Menchits (with no AA weapons) killing Minders? They may be slow as dirt, but they're still aircraft.

Great looking game.

"How were Menchits (with no AA weapons) killing Minders?"

Because we messed up, I guess.

Thanks, Caesar!

Very good AAR Scott;
I saw these buildings and figures in person at Cold Wars and they are outstanding.
Scott did a great job with them and if I had some disposable income, I'd pick up two battlegroups and his buildings.
Thanks for sharing the report.

Because we messed up, I guess.

They were in mixed formation with some Phobos AA walkers, weren't they? Maybe that was what was doing the killing?

Made me go double-check my book, anyway – I was afraid I'd been misplaying the Minders myself. They sure don't feel like aircraft crawling around at 4" a turn.

Pictors Studio18 Mar 2013 10:40 a.m. PST

2" a turn in my rulebook. But yeah, they seem like they should be hovering ground troops rather than actual aircraft.
