Iran has launched a domestically built destroyer in the Caspian Sea, according to state TV. The Jamaran-2 was inaugurated in the port city of Anzali on the Caspian Sea. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the deployment was aimed at bolstering peace and friendship in the region.

Nothing like bolstering peace and friendship like showing off a new warship :-)

Ah, in that case old Irainian destroyer.

Klebert L Hall18 Mar 2013 6:50 a.m. PST

It's a corvette.

Shh, they like to call it a destroyer.

Redroom18 Mar 2013 7:28 a.m. PST

Iran has taken on a few pirates iirc, corvette/destroyer should work in that role.

GROSSMAN18 Mar 2013 8:57 a.m. PST

Well.. as long as it's for peace and friendship I guess it's ok.

Meiczyslaw18 Mar 2013 9:08 a.m. PST

It's a destroyer. A small World War I destroyer, as opposed to a massive (WWI-cruiser-sized) modern destroyer.

No matter the size it gives Iran the possibility to disrupt the oil flow from surrounding areas, particularly Baku, that now goes directly to the Mediterranean by pipeline.

David Manley18 Mar 2013 10:23 a.m. PST

Anything can be a destroyer these days. IIRC the US ones come in at 14ktons now :D

We're doomed, the Iranians have Stealth Fighters, Unlimited energy, superior tanks and weapons, the ability to go into space and now not only the most powerful destroyer in the world, but it's the size of a corvette …

I for one welcome our new Persian overlords !

Patrick are you sure..

Well…as long as they are such snappy dressers.

Mako1118 Mar 2013 4:41 p.m. PST

Yea, looks a bit small for a destroyer to me as well.

A corvette would probably be a much more accurate description.

Then again, in the recent posting I added on Carriers now being the new Gunboat, the Russian propagandists were referring to "battleships" that will be accompanying the four carrier battlegroups that they plan to produce in the near future. I suspect that those "battleships" will really be frigates, corvettes, and destroyers, but "battleships" has a much more intimidating ring to it.

By that standard, it's actually the largest, most powerful Trireme the world has ever seen!

Obviously, the Iranians need your marketing genius.

You have to admit, the ship looks sharp. And being deployed in the Caspian Sea renders it immediately combat ineffective for operations in the Persian Gulf.

…renders it immediately combat ineffective for operations in the Persian Gulf

Not with their new, long range homing missiles… ;-)

What is that missile mounted on the (Geoff shows his complete lack of knowledge over correct naval terminology) front? It looks a bit 'bolted on' (but perhaps many things do?)

PHGamer21 Mar 2013 9:39 a.m. PST

As a former Fire Control Petty Officer having spent 5 years at sea, I can say that is the "pointy end" of the ship.

PHGamer21 Mar 2013 9:43 a.m. PST

But now that you mention it, that missile launcher does look like it was just placed there. It doesn't seem to be on a rotating launcher. They better stock the windex, because if that missile launches, it is going to smoke the glass on the bridge.

Mako1121 Mar 2013 3:00 p.m. PST

It's not needed there, since their stealth aircraft carrier, and stealth fighter squadrons are on patrol in the Gulf.
