Well I have the base game and still haven't played it yet, but soon. Now what should I be contemplating to purchase next to begin filling out each side? What should be getting for the Empire side and what should I be getting for the Rebel side?

More TIE Fighters. Lots more. Also, a Y-Wing, great for picking off and crippling TIEs.

Another base game. You can't beat it for the price because you get two more TIE fighters, another X-wing and more dice and other stuff.

Most will tell you to get a second core set. I think you have to figure out if you are going to be playing pick up games at home with friends and family, are you going to get into Tournament play and an arms race with each new release? Or are you going to do club games with several scenario based games.

I am not really one to ask. I am building fleets because that is what I do.

I think you can not go wrong getting another core set and one each of the first expansions. That will give you most of the pilots and options for tournament and pick up games.

I have held off of Slave One as I do not see a use for it outside of tournament play or one or two scenarios. I did go over board on the Tie Advanced and have eight of them and plan to get one more but many will tell you it is not very good in tournament play.

I totally disagree with the conventional wisdom about the game being mass offensive on the first pass. I think there is much more in setting up the attack in follow on turns and maximize air to air combat tactics.

There is a lot to get into beyond just X-Wings on Tie Fighters but if tournament play is your thing then look at the 100 point builds and go from there.

Also check around and see what everyone else in your area are doing if anything. I know one group where three guys have everything for one faction or the other and a few of the other side. When they get together they have enough to do just about anything.

If you don't mind "mini games" I'd get one of everything. But yeah, make that 1 extra TIE your first purchase.

CorpCommander17 Mar 2013 10:27 p.m. PST

Tournaments are fun but for me scenario play is even more fun. I like to put together squadrons so I tend to get 3 of each. The advanced tie is the only ship I only have 1 of. I did get a Falcon and Slave 1. I think I have 8 tie fighters and 4 X-Wings.

I also got 2 base sets when they were double-take low priced at Target. Do you need all that extra stuff? In my opinion, its very nice to have and the price can be right. For $60 USD I got 6 fighters and two of everything else. The extra dice are what you will really be happy about. I have mixed feelings about the double sized damage deck. For now I only play with one deck.

Mako1117 Mar 2013 10:31 p.m. PST

Yea, I agree, at least two core sets for general play, since you get more dice, maneuver templates, and the price of the fighters is less that way. Then, select, as desired.

Personally, I'd go for a minimum of 3 x X-Wings, and 6 x Tie fighters (three core sets), plus at least one each of the Advanced Tie and Y-Wing. Of course, if your friends have some of those, you won't need as many, unless you want to play in tournaments.

Then perhaps, at least a couple of the Tie Interceptors and A-Wings.

After that, you can consider the Millenium Falcon and Slave One.

Aliosborne18 Mar 2013 4:20 a.m. PST

The core sets are good value but you do not get all the pilot cards you get int the packaged tie and xwing, so agian if your not bothered about that I would get a second core box (the extra dice are good too) then maybe an extra tie fighter, ywing, xwing and tie advanced, that way you also have all the pilots

The also have the tie intercepters and A wings out, I have not used these yet so dont know much about them

The Millenium falcon though is a lovely model and I will get one jsut for that

Thanks for all the input guys. So I guess I'm looking at one more core set. Then a Tie Interceptor and a Y-wing. Then maybe another Interceptor and an A-wing. That should cover it for a while. The the falcon just because its so cool.

I never like to play tournaments. Don't like power players. I just like to have a good time with friends when I can find them.

Oh . . . Any good sites for build and scenario ideas.

I bought in with one core set, then added another to have more dice and templates and such. Then I went nuts. wink I now have the two core sets, 4 additional X wings, 4 additional TIE, 3 Y wings, 3 A wings, 4 TIE interceptors, 2 TIE Advanced, a YT-1300, and a Firepray 31.

The boardgamegeek forum on the game has a lot of good info.

If you want all the options, there are some pilots included in the X-Wing and TIE Fighter expansion packs that aren't included in the basic set. I bought one of each for that reason, then another basic set for even more TIEs.

richarDISNEY18 Mar 2013 8:06 a.m. PST

I'd skip buying the TIE fighter expansion.
While the new pilots are ok, the cards can be found in the Vader TIE.

Get the Falcon and two A-wings.

And at least two or three more base sets.

A second core and at least one each of the basic expansions ( x . y , adv tie and tie) will give all the cards and upgrades . then the big ships A, abd int tie .

haywire18 Mar 2013 8:48 a.m. PST

You may want to get one of each expansion fighter, even the x-wing and TIE fighter, because they come with extra hero pilots and upgrade cards that do not come in the base set.

A Few Maneuvers has lots of good stuff: link
And a calendar of events for tournies and casual play: afewmaneuvers.com/miniwp3

And link for the aforementioned BGG forum: link

Both AFM and BGG get more traffic and useful postings than the official forum (I think the breakdown into sub-categories helps the 1st two a lot): link

If you're playing for fun, why aren't you starting with a full squadron of 12 TIE Fighters? ~,^

DeRuyter18 Mar 2013 10:12 a.m. PST

I agree with many others – get another core set, then add Tie advanced, Y-Wing, etc. Don't forget a star mat and/or a Death Star mat.

As a newby to the game, I got 3 boxes (for cheapness and extra game component) and some expansions, I definitely think it plays better with several fighters a side!

Good luck – its a great game!

Mako1118 Mar 2013 4:49 p.m. PST

Yea, I agree on at least one of each of the individual fighter expansions, so you can get some of the new cards.

PapaSync19 Mar 2013 11:46 a.m. PST

Even more Coolness.

Anyone in Florida near Lake Mary? Just a little north of Orlando. But then again they call everything down here Orlando. For heavens sake Disney isn't even in Orlando.

miniMo,
Hit most of the best sites. I am on all three and they vary in how easy they are to navigate but once you get the hang of it they are great.

I bought two cores, two Y-wings, an X-wing pack, two TIE packs (one was actually a mistaken gift, but I'm glad to have it now), a TIE-Advanced, and so far in Wave 2 an A-wing and the Millennium Falcon. I plan to pick up another A-wing and two TIE-Interceptors. Don't have any interest in Slave 1..
I was considering another core game for the extra X and TIEs, but since one of my gaming buddies grabbed two sets, I figure we've got what we need for "cinematic" battles. (A full "squadron" of X-wings, several three-ship flights of TIE combos, a pair of Ys, a pair of As and the MF… that pretty much covers the actual dogfighting "skirmish" scenes in the first three films.)

Like everyone else, I anticipate a Wave 3 release, hopefully with B-wings and TIE-bombers.
