A quick search didn't reveal a topic on this yet, so check out this very interesting website. The project involves building a reproduction of the French national frigate L'Hermione, which transported Lafayette to America. The ship was recently launched, and masts are being erected.

FYI, the French language version of the site generally has more up-to-date information, with photos.

Interesting but I don't think I'll be spending $1,600 USD on a ship model anytime soon.

A friend sent me a link to this project some time ago. The ship looks fantastic, and the pictures of the construction was very impressive. She will be gorgeous under sail!

I've seen the W-I-P on this fregate twice in 2007 and 2009 IIRC. Then it was just the hulk skeleton you could see. Indeed petty amazing work they are doing, considering all is done by volunteers only. But they are far behind schedule. The ship was supposed to set sail for Boston in 2009, I recall. Unfortunately I won't get a chance to see it this year, now that she is near completed. What a beauty.

Got to stand on the deck last year and feel her gently rocking under my feet – a long term ambition.

I have visited Rochefort 5 times over the last decade to see her being built, truly a wonderful sight (and smell !)

Note that this website still exists. It is a useful supplement to the new English-language site, in that this older site has many additional images of her construction over the years.
