For years now historical miniature gamers from the HMGS-PSW have been hosting Civil War table top battles for Civil War days. St. Catherine's Academy is a 100 year old boarding school with a military tradition and Civil War Days is a major community outreach and fund raiser for them. The Cadets help set up everything and the parents man the food and raffle booths as the re-enactors setup camp and prepare for the twice a day skirmishes between the North and South.
In this picture a couple of Northern Re-enactors answer questions from some of the visiting school children. This year 300 students from one of the local schools will be attending Civil War Days as part of a credit based history assignment. They have been given a question and answer sheet and they will be graded based on how many many of the American Civil War questions they get right. Each booth supplied questions for the quiz and the organizer, Mary Crowley, a local teacher, said those submitted by the HMGS-PSW members were the best. She especially liked:
Which General said, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance. " shortly before being killed by a Confederate sniper?
Our booth went up in half and hour with the help of the hard working cadets and Mark, Brian and Tim and I sat down to a well deserved breakfast to await the arrival of the crowds of students. Given that this weekend the weather looks fantastic, they are hoping for 2,000 or more attendees.
The HMGS-PSW literature display. We are giving out flyers for St. Crispin's Irregulars' Hobby Day, March Forward! on March 23rd and another for joining the HMGS-PSW. We have a copy of the Historicon 2011 program to show and a few Opsrey books as examples of the research that goes into the hobby. In addition, we always have on hand the names and addresses of our local hobby shops like Brookhurst Hobbies, the WarHouse, Aero Hobbies and The Realm so the attendees can pick up some supplies to get started with historical miniature gaming! The event runs from 9:30 AM until 3:00pm Saturday and Sunday, March 16th and 17th. Admission is $7 USD
