I'm looking for a set of rules for small actions in the age of sail. Detail is good. I really like the movement, and crew allocation systems of Heart of Oak… the combat, not so much. The card activation of Kiss Me Hardy, but it lacks the chrome I'm looking for. Absolutely hate hex based systems. Any suggestions?

I don't know about the crew allocation part, but if you don't mind pre-painted models, this may be worth watching:

if you want chrome and detail to burn, you wont go past the ful Signal Close Action set 4ed

Try Warfare at Sea in the Age of Reason. Simple and effective to do naval actions from the Dutch wars thru Napoleonic.

I second Langton's Signal Close Action if you want detail. It covers any possible detail you could want.

I will order a copy of Signal Close Action. It seems to be what I'm looking for. Thanks

Signal Close Action gets an encore from me, and the SCA quick play is also a great set…

Ordered.

Ouch, postage is painful

If it is detail you are after then there is also the computer-based Clear for Action rules.

Rod Langton sold these for many years as well, they have now been made available by the designer as a free download.

You can fight with 1:300,1:1200 or other scales – detail goes to crew allocation to each gun battery, sail handling (per sail), boatwork, anchoring etc

Works very well for single ship actions, frigates, gunboats and brigs etc where this level of detail is rewarded.

If you are interested e-mail me on markvbarker@aol.com and I will provide.

Form Line of Battle by David Manley (a naval architect)has everything. It can be simple or complex. An A+ set at the right price. Download it from The Wargamers vault.
