Yes, it has probably been on TMP before, so let's take the "TMP LINK" for granted, shall we? grin

I just thought I would bring it up again.

I read where a veteran recalled the only way to properly give the yell is on a dead run, with an empty stomach.

Was there a minimum number of teeth required?

My grandfather used to visit an old Confederate veterans home in Harper's Ferry…. He used to find old bullets and use them for fishing sinkers too!

Dark Knights And Bloody Dawns15 Mar 2013 10:31 a.m. PST

If someone yelled at me like that… I'd shoot em!

vtsaogames15 Mar 2013 10:40 a.m. PST

I dunno… shave 40-50 years off of them and have maybe 1000 running at you doing that…

That will be our group in 20 years when they announce there is a cure for erectile dysfunction.

As an Englishman, I found this fascinating and moving.
I must, however, express my surprise and sorrow at the disrespect – perhaps unintended – shown to these veterans by the title of the post.
On this side of the Atlantic we would not refer to, for example, veterans of the Great War – British or German – in such terms.

Totally agree Arthur1815.

mis-read to "old Rebels demonstrate scary farts"

Ken Portner15 Mar 2013 2:09 p.m. PST

I agree that the title of the post is unfortunate.

They seem very consistent, a sign that it's accurate, I'd say.

I find your offense offensive.

Arthur-- Calling an old man and "old fart" over here is not any sign of disrespect, more an affectionate nickname. I call my Dad and my buddy's Dads that all the time. Heck, the guy who started the thread is the OFM (Old Fart Meister), so I think you can see where he was coming from.

arthur181515 Mar 2013 4:31 p.m. PST

Nazrat, thanks for that clarification. Two nations divided by a common language, I suppose. Over here, whilst an elderly man might refer to himself and his friends in a jocose manner using these words, it would be considered impolite/disrespectful for others to do so, as it would suggest contempt for their age, opinions or – in this case – military service.

Jay Arnold, you will note that I commented that the apparent disrespect was 'perhaps unintended', and nazrat has explained the difference in usage USA/UK. If you choose to be 'offended' by my comments, so be it.

The Duke was not averse to "insulting" his men.
"I don't know if they scare the enemy, but By God, they sure frighten me!"

Twisting tails. The problem with this place is people are quick to get their panties in a wad over nothing.

Or close to nothing.

I worked for years with a WW2 Marine. He was a great guy who we called 'POPS' or as I would address him sometimes 'Senile Old Fart'. We were doing an outside pyshical job, not an inside professional setting and we were friends. His last name was Pogue which I found out was a slanderous word to call a Marine. So naturally, I called him that the next day. BIG mistake!., He chewed on me for quite a while. I apologized and got him calmed down. I would never have called him that if I had known he would get so mad.

In the movie 'FULL METAL JACKET' a Marine calls another one a "rear echelon Pogue".

The truth is, that in our current social climate here in the United States, we have forgotten what respect is, or just don't care anymore. I am an old fart, because I haven't forgotten the respect and courtesy that my parents taught me.
That being said, I don't think this thread was meant to be disrespectful!

Watching that I kept thinking they went from having no electricity and limited running water. To audio and video recordings, telephones, cars and airplanes.

Also it sounds more similar to a coyote barking then the yeeeee haaawwww I've heard at civil war reenactments. Some of them gentlemen looked like they'd still have no problem shouldering a rifle if need be.

Which was the point of my thread title.

My grandfather (who made the Murmansk run twice) had a t-shirt that said "old fart". It's probably time for me to get one.

As for Brit vs. US English, fag means a cigarette or buddy to a Brit, but derisive term for a gay dude on this side of the pond, etc.

When I first started on the TFL Yahoo group I was constantly gob-smacked by Brit slang, needing translation often.

Quite good yells,though,from the veterans.

And JOFM was it not old beaky who referred to his troops as "the scum of the earth "?

arthur181516 Mar 2013 10:22 a.m. PST

Indeed he did, in reference to the classes from which they were often recruited – ne'er do wells, vagabonds, criminals &c. – but concluded, "so it is wonderful what fine fellows we make of them."

And when Czar Alexander commented on the shabby appearance of the British troops parading through Paris in 1814, Wellington replied, "Perhaps. But your majesty will find none who fight better."

He was not insulting his troops, just being – un PC – brutally honest about their origins.

What a great video. I work with an attorney who is 84, a WWII vet, who tells me stories as told to him by his grandfather, a Civil War veteran. It is fascinating to listen to a man who heard the stories directly from a Civil War vet.
