I had been wavering on purchasing from Mad Mecha Guy (http://www.madmechaguy.co.uk/index.html) for a few weeks but was nervous due to the lack of any testimonials. I took a plunge last week after a very pleasant online email exchange with the man behind it and I felt the need to reciprocate by leaving a positive testimonial for other wavering souls out there.

This is an arrangement I threw together last night and earlier today, using about a third of the road-set, the brick wall set, three sets of buildings/shop sets plus some very generously added freebees (including the adorable little food stands, the garages, the street signs, the watchtower and the block of flats in the top right corner).

A Rebel mini PMC trooper stands guard outside the compound of the local corporate representative. The wall pack comes with two vehicle-gates and several of the straight sections have pedestrian access (and doors), as can be seen in the top right.

For the workers, the accomodation is far less luxurious. Pictured is the interior of the "student-housing" variation, along with the same intrepid PMC fellow, no doubt ready to break up any unwanted "Union activity" or such. I have some 28mm paper interior fixtures from Ebbles that may end up inside here.

The local garrison is hardly more comfortable but the men are well compensated for their time. One thing I really liked about the buildings was the variety offered. When you order "5x Building A", you steel yourself for 5 identical boring blocks. Not so in this case where several different variations are offered and all of the walls are cross compatible. Thus, from the same set, it is possible to assemble some as dingy barracks and others as airy open-plan shops and watering holes and potentially everything in between.

The general quality is fantastic. I have not yet used a lick of glue; it all fits together that well. Of course, unless you want a careless movement to cause your entire structure to fall down, I would recommend using glue. But that is pretty good for a dry fit (which I do also recommend: no instructions are included but the designs are very self explanatory).

Final conclusions:

Pros
– Cheap, easy to put together and simple to paint
– Excellent service, friendly and frank communication and very rapid dispatch
– Clever designs, plenty of cross-compatibility of walls etc between buildings and surprising variety

Cons
– Some fragile bits that may take a bit of a beating during postage
– Clean up required, especially on some of the thin interior walls where the MDF tears when you try and punch out doorways etc
– Fairly simplistic aesthetic that lends itself better to temporary/cheap prefab settlements than full cityscapes

Looks nice to me… though I could do without the dashes in the middle of the streets.
Are the curbs of one piece with the roads, or are they separate? I looked on the site but it's hard to tell.

Some of the pics aren't showing up for me. What does a set-up like that run? I like the layout…

Well, in addition to his MDF store – he's the guy who sculpted these for GZG:

Now you do have me wondering what an MDF mech would look like. Especially after seeing this yesterday: link

I do have some of his stuff and agree with Mook, really nice designs and easily slot together.

@Space Wizard – the kerbs are separate and if the dashes are not needed should be easily fillable. The paler bits you see in the road are pedestrian crossings/speed-bumps.

Will be ordering more once the Kickstarter for Empire of the Dead is over.

Okay… here are the pictures again.

Excellent. Wish I had that two years ago when I started my own city.

WOW! Those do look good!

Reminds me of the wooden toy sets I had as a child.
Not in a bad way, just in a fond memory way.

If people want road with out the dashes it is easy for my to do a set, only requires a bit of deleting. If anyone wants a set with only straight sections in please contact.

I am willing to post of USA but postage is a might expensive have found parcel2go have some cheaper options for lareger/heavier orders, I would be willing to license my designs.

Sorry no MDF mecha at present, but do some suitable hardened hangers. Have to look at getting some of the those Russian ones in stock or the Japanese ones.

If anyone wants a design doing I am happy to do & sell you them!

Silly question… wouldn't one be able to make roads without the center dashes simply by flipping the middle part upside down? :)

@MadMechaGuy – would you consider doing a house designed for a "green roof" instead of the pitched style? Something along these lines:

I can but agree on MMG stuff. Got some this week and it's great stuff. Those pictures have just made me want more!

Where is the watch tower bit from? Can't see it on the web site.

Caesar15 Mar 2013 7:42 a.m. PST

Any chance you'll do 28mm?

Mad Mecha Guy15 Mar 2013 10:16 a.m. PST

Rep of Tolworth:
Reference the watch tower – was a freebie b-grade one I sent that had a minor design error, have redone the design to make simpler to cut & construct but forgot to add to website as was doing a closed tower version as well, then got to thinking about doing a prison set with walls, towers & block houses (zombie proof?).
Tower is available with 6cm or 8cm high legs, price will 6.50 for either set, with 8 towers in 6cm type & 7 towers in 8cm set.

Yes could just flip over roads unless wanted the cross road marking or could fill with a tiny bit of putty/glue. Might have to do versions with double yellow lines (anyone got a robo-traffic warden?)

Some of my designs have flat roofs. Would be happy to do green roof types, assume you would what them to have a flat roof with a low level (2-3mm high)wall to hold the greenery/gravel. Which would you want doing or new designs?

Have to look into rescaling some to 28mm figures, assuming doubling size would be about right.

Single residences is what I meant. I assume the pitched-roof buildings in the middle of Gasmasked Mook's first picture (and the fourth picture of his second post) are single homes? Those would look very futuristic with recessed flat roofs – especially painted white and flocked on the top.

Though those building are part of the shop range.
Is easy to modify the base design to add a green roof, have a flat roof design only need to do the rooftop ring.
Might do some other variations with squarer, but mix of larger (french doorish)and small windows to give a few pack variations.
Been working on a 10x28cm 2mm MDF barge (mostly done).

Very nice terrain..

But i find lack of Mechas in Mad Mecha Guy shop disturbing :)

After closer inspection.

WOW
Those are very nice terrain !!!

If iI understand correctly you get 1 Rad set for 24Ł
and 1 wal set for 6Ł ?

I was wondering how much of them opticale there is, as those interest me most.

But buildings are very cool too..

Only thong that stop me from ordering right now is shipping price which i fear will make it another wish list only item for me ;(

Nice looking stuff. Was not familiar with him. Thank you for posting!

republic of tolworth19 Mar 2013 5:43 a.m. PST

I'm feeling some watchtowers in my future.

Site does need a shake up though. I would have bought the split level building if I had seen it.

Also is it possible to get some of the buildings without interior walls? I find it ends up too fussy for the club fingered amongst my group!

Mad Mecha Guy19 Mar 2013 8:29 a.m. PST

could do building without internal walls, they are not structural, will have to see what can add to the sheet to replace the walls space on the sheet (don't like wasting material)
