Interesting, but rather sensationalistic (is that even a word?). I especially like the line about how Britainīs best friend almost became itīs worst enemy. Almost? Meh. Actually, it is the job of the military to be prepared for just about any scenario. I imagine there are secret plans today that would shock us. |

There is an interesting comment in one of the Official Histories, The Defence of the United Kingdom, about the siting of the British airfields. It was decided that in the '20s our most likely opponent would be France as it was the only other European nation in a fit enough state to wage war, so our airfields were placed with a war with France in mind. Ironically when the war came, it was with Germany, but the airfields were perfectly placed due the fall of France! |

But elements of it were actually acted upon: the secret airfields, Lindberg's recce, the Canadian officers and their road trip, and the general feelings between the nations at the time. Remember, this was the 1930's and many Americans really remembered the War of 1812
, heck the 1930's were almost as close to 1812 as we are to WWI!! The last veteran of that conflict died just a year or two ago. So it wasn't that big of a leap. Also remember the Washington Treaty. Who was that REALLY aimed at? And just WHO was the navy that the US envisioned was its most likely opponent? Japan? Sure
the UK??? You've got to wonder. |
