G'day all, Has anyone else had as short a campaign as Mac and I played. Modern Naval Battles, exp 1 and Campaign exp (see dvg.com) Me: Indian Navy 30 VP Mac: Japanese Navy 30 VP I had intiative – drew missions – selected Shore Strikes Played campaign cards, I more heavily than Mac. Both committed all ships 1st Turn – with 7 + 1 CC + 3 Inspiration = 11 cards I launched attacks from everything except my SS – targeting the objectives. Japanese AD and actions saved most targets.. I claimed only 1. Cruise missiles started to become low :-( Japanese counter-attack saw my SS and a Frigate sunk. 2nd Turn – Again targetting the objectives with all I had against vigourous Japanese defence.. some damage done and some ships out of cruise missiles. Japanese counter-attack sinks another frigate and a DDG 3rd Turn – everything in again except for a small gun attack.. and two objectives claimed and a Japanese FAC! Japanese counter-attack sinks another DDG 4th Turn – what is left does what it can.. and 4th Objective destroyed! Japanese counter-attacks and as the smoke clears the Indian Fleet is still (just – 1 Carrier and 1 Frigate) in being! Campaign ends
40VP to 14VP Victory to India! Wash up – Mac should have used all of his strategy cards, it may have meant the difference. My fleet was hindered by out of SSM/CM. I probably shouldn't have taken the SS – it didn't do anything but sink, I did take it in case I drew torpedo cards, but I only did once it had been sunk
Lots of fun – and plays very differently to a normal game (much faster – as you need to achieve your objectives in a limitted number of turns and you can't easily re-inforce). How are other players finding their campaigns? |

Sounds about right when the missiles start flying. Modern combat is very deadly. |

Pretty similar, I took JMSDF against PRC. End of the first mission it was pretty much over with my oppo being a couple of points short of the 40. Same mission so it might just be the VC for this one are skewed. Havent played for a while though |

Yeah! I got wiped. We haven't played enough to know if the mission was skewed or not.I think if I could have reduced the game length by one turn I might have won. There were a lot of indians in the water at turn 2. |

In modern naval combat, there's the "
.use them or lose them
" mentality, which is pretty accurate for one off engagements, against known foes. I suspect in order to balance that out a bit, you need some neutral vessels, or even warships from other nations as well in the mix, just to make life interesting. It would also be helpful to have some sort of a mini-campaign tied in, so that a force that uses a large portion of their SSMs won't have anything later for offense/defense. That'd definitely make life a little more interesting, and realistic. |

The campaign rules do cover ammunition depletion, just that this campaign was won in the first battle, if there was a second battle the Indian fleet was very depleted

G'day all, A quick update – last campaign game played had PLAN vs Russia – the campaign was three missions long – With the PLAN just winning, having access to a lot of cheap ships helped, however the Russians large ships held out for a while – being able to take damage rather than sinking

Does this game translate to miniatures/tabletop well or at all? Cheers |

G'day Hazza31B, Our group has found that it doee! Rules as Written (RAW) – it makes for a reasonably abstract – but fast and impressive game.. Pretty pictures at: link game review at: link variant rules for less abstraction (& longer games): link Very much prettier pictures (with write ups of variant games – by end settled back on RAW): link The Campaign system would work just as well with miniatures – perhaps better! |

Unfortunately living in the wilds of NSW – I don't get to game as much as I would like – but managed another campaign game with Mac in Sydney. Mac took US, I China.. Mac's luck wasn't great and mine was.. I did weigh the odds somewhat in my favour by using a lot of strategy cards in the first battle – which again decided the campaign. But the US fleet with Blue Ridge, Aegis DDG and Coral Sea screened by some FFGs is a hard fleet to beat.. and I lost most of the PLAN doing so. After the campaign – we did discuss what we would love to see in another expansion to MNB is DVG was to do one
I'd like Assault ships Mac would like more strategy cards and more scenerio cards We would both like a small ships version – with a focus on littorial.. So what would others like? |
