I find it amazing that the only 25/28mm Mayans EVER were from Naismith Design. Since they are almost impossible to find now, this is a good sign. Naismith also had the first Aztecs, but there have been a few more Aztecs since, but oddly no Mayans. Naismith were fantastic figures of a truly spectacular looking army. It's good to know that Mayans are available again. I hope they do well. |

Can't see pics from work (if indeed there is a pic!) but looking forward to seeing these. Agreed with John re the Naismith ones – a real shame all those ranges disappeared. |

Ged, no one is happier about a new Mayan range, than myself. A few comments if I may: 1) I'm not aware of any pictorial or written evidence that the Maya went naked into battle. I think your sculptor is conflating them with the Huaxtecs of Central Mexico. On the other hand, can you produce some basic warriors wearing the wrap around cotton corselet? 2) I'm glad you are producing some rectangular shields with the round ones. I'd prefer to see the "daisy-style" shield with the long fabric trails on the bottom and the top of the shield. This design was used to entangle the enemy's weapons in close combat. 3) Also, instead of concentrating on an Aztec style Maquahuitl, how about the more typical Kukri-style "bat" weapon, used by the Maya? A good example of that can be seen in the Heath book, Armies of the Aztec and Inca Empires, page 65. I look forward to your Mayan line. I'll be buying some. Please PM me if you'd like to. |

Here is a good illustration from a vase or cylinder. This is an exploded view:
The warrior on the left has a simple rectangular shield. The others appear to have their shields adorned with streams of fabric coming from the top and bottom. Also note the cool skull glyph on the one shield. The mid-right warrior has an "halab" which is an atl-atl spear thrower. Also note the thrusting spears with their distinctive "wrapping" near the obsidian tip. Here are some simpler, unadorned round and rectangular shields, from another vase:
Note the vertical holding brace on the larger shields. Here is a plate showing a single noble warrior. It is difficult to see the details of his body, but his shield design is very clear:
The fabric fastened to the top and bottom of his rectangular shield is evident. Hope that provides you with some ideas. |

Wow, how hard is it to Google for a specific Mayan weapon? Actually it's hard!! Googling "Mayan obsidian weapon" gets you a lot of fantasy BS, Aztec weapons, obsidian eccentrics, and not a lot of actual Mayan weapons. Here is a portion of one of the frescoes at Chichen Itza:
The lower left figure carries something that looks like a boomerang. This is actually the Mayan "bat", a small curved axe-like weapon. At the toe end, away from the hand, would be obsidian blades. These are missing from the painting. Here is the other half of the same painting:
The two warriors in the middle also carry bats. The painting is simple and stylized and the weapons also do not show the obsidian edging. However, from all the artwork above, one can see that no one is actually naked. |

Bowman appreciate your time and effort. you are quite right the Mayans are not well documented. i have an old book from Russian with really old prints/drawings lifted from mayan drawings and yes your right they did use sythe stlye bats and swords for want of a better word
these will be available for later figures.the Naked guy is Huaxtec btw! as technically they were "mayan"
the daisy shields.. streamer shields were already in the mix//fear not!! as are every weapon i can find info on. what we need is Ian Heath to redraw some of the types shown above!! any scrap of info welcomed as i will be doing other tribes rather then the other two big players first
not decided yet. feel free to e-mail me at gjmfigurines4@btinternet.com with any requests or ideas im happy to look at/ commission these and ship pics in !! great stuff. best regards Ged gringo40s.com gringo40s.blogspot.com and expanding 28mm ranges |
