So what does Qantas have to due with one of the most maligned aircraft from The Great War? Ok not miniatures related, but a fun fact from a recent read.

Huh. Interesting.

I thought so. It is an interesting book about an aircraft that is often passed over. It is also the only aircraft (or so I am told) that was in service before the RFC and was in service with the RAF after the RFC.

The airframe was not the big fault, it was the deplorable armament (not the least of which was the reversed positions of pilot and gunner) and the unpowered engine. With decent horsepower and a Scarff ring for the rear gun the BE2c could have performed adequately to defend itself. This is allowing of course for the additional fact that construction quality was bad for a long time, which has nothing to do with the fundamental design of the BE. The "Pup" and other aircraft also suffered for a time from poor construction which caused airframe failures. The RE8, direct descendant of the BE, was a sturdy, well-made aircraft, but also underpowered, which was its most glaring fault….

It took a long time to add dual controls. With the piolit in the rear it made positioning the gun in interesting ways.
