How hard would it be to make something like this floating island/station/market?

Not very.

Goober05 Mar 2013 9:56 a.m. PST

Basic shape looks very easy, but the devil is in the details.

clkeagle05 Mar 2013 9:58 a.m. PST

I think you could do it with a couple of GameCraft MDF buildings on top of a large, flat Really Useful Box.

This is nice:

should be easy to cut that out of mdf, only simple flat panels. Something else to design

Do you mean a wargaming model, or a real one? You can never be too prepared for the Apocalypse

PJ Parent05 Mar 2013 3:06 p.m. PST

I think the tires are key.

PJ Parent05 Mar 2013 3:13 p.m. PST

The article and pictures don't give a good indication of scale – how big would you want it?

Cacique Caribe05 Mar 2013 3:26 p.m. PST

I guess large enough for 3-4 shops and huts for the vendors to live in.

Maybe if I remove these from their base and re-position on a barge deck?

Thoughts?

There is a company called Frenchman River Model Works that make HO (1:87) boat and barge kits. I bought one to use for modern Spec Ops with 15mm. They would work out for 20mm as well.

Now that you've prompted my memory, Walthers do a moulded plastic RR barge kit in 1/87 too. That could work out nicely for something like this.

Should be fairly easy to make, as noted the details such as the tires are paramount…

Great idea on the tires.

Have come up with a model: link
Is it like what you wanted?

Needs bit more tweaking to finalise the design.

Anyone else thinking of getting two or three of those barges, linking them together with rope bridges and then using the container packs and scrap to build a shanty town on top? I will have to hold off on that project though; Just spent the last of my alloted hobby allowance on tracking down two of the six remaining First Edition Twilight 2000 modules I don't already have. Never found anyone crazy enough to play them with me but they are a joy to peruse anyway.

PS: anyone have a copy of a Survivor's Guide to the United Kingdom that they would be willing to part with?

Mad Mecha Guy23 Mar 2013 8:32 a.m. PST

You know, you what one to barge into your gaming, to carry off your hard earned cash, to shackle you with another project!

@gasmasked mook.
I think I have every book and version of t2000 in the loft. I will have a look to see what's left. Sure I have The UK one.

Gasmasked Mook23 Mar 2013 11:31 a.m. PST

Wow! I was just about to put a message up on the Modern RPG board. I have been hunting down the last few modules for a while now. Satellite Down, Howling Wilderness and the RDF Sourcebook are the other three (although I am only really interested in the last two, Satellite Down just for the sake of completeness). But as a Brit, A Survivor's Guide to the UK has always been something of a grail for me. Please do tell me if you find anything.

And maybe I can justify a barge as part of a Pirates of the Vistula campaign…

Dragon Gunner23 Mar 2013 11:34 a.m. PST

It would make for a cool game to have a couple of linked barges pulled by a tug travleing down a river. Wasteland mutants firing from the shore and attempting to board in little boats. At the far end of the game board is a blockade like Sand Pebbles faced.

republic of tolworth23 Mar 2013 11:45 a.m. PST

Think I have all those, no promise, but I will check.

Aghhh! Just checked, some 2nd ed stuff. Rest went to recycle!

Clucking Bell!

Gasmasked Mook23 Mar 2013 12:14 p.m. PST

RECYCLE? Such an ignominious end… I fear I will be up tonight, imagining those books turned into fast-food wrappers and tween-lit vampire novels. The humanity!

Well, guess I'll have to keep looking. Some say that the joy is in the hunt.

@Mad Mecha Guy.

They're very cool….could have done with those a couple of weeks ago when I was finishing the 'dock area' of the shanty town for our Hammer's Slammers game @ Salute!

If you are coming to Salute come see me @ the game…..you've some really good stuff on your site!

Mad Mecha Guy25 Mar 2013 7:25 a.m. PST

dear Bullwinkletecat12

yes I will be coming to salute, should be there by around 1030, will seek out the game, otherwise be found lurking around GZG stand admiring the new miniatures.
