I'd like to know what type(s) of torpedoes the Royal Danish Navy used on their ex-German WWII S-Boats, in the 1940's – 1960's, of the Glenten, and Flyvefisken classes (the older class, not the new one). Apparently, they used about 18 x S-100 and S-38 class boats in their navy, from 1947 onwards, and I'm aware that they are 21" models, but no details on the types and models of torpedoes they used seems to be available, e.g. straight-running, wake-homing, wire-guided, etc. I'd like to know if they used surplus German torpedoes left over from from WWII, or if they used some newer Swedish, or West German model torpedoes (and/or possibly those from Britain, or the USA, though I imagine the former are more likely)? Any info you can shed on the subject will be greatly appreciated, since I've been unable to find any details on the subject with Yahoo and Google searches thus far. |

IIRC, the Danes refitted their former KM boats with UK torpedoes. The enclosed tubes were removed and RN model tubes fitted. |

I think they tested that out with some of the later models (Falken class, if I recall correctly), based upon one photo I've seen, but it appears the standard launching mechanism through the bow tubes, like the Germans did. I did see one photo where an S-Boat had a torpedo tube that could be angled outwards for firing, was being trialed, instead of firing through the bow section, like usual. It was mounted just aft of that. Thanks for the info on the possible use of UK torpedoes though. I hadn't heard of that before. I think in the much later Willemoes class, they used Swedish torpedoes, but I'm not sure when they switched over to them as a supplier. |
