Yep, that's right. Someone actually STILL plays VOID on occasion
Usually Friday nights is RPG night as I GM for my son and his buddies, but less than half showed up yesterday, so I broke out 500pts each in the four "human" factions and they played a teaching two-on-two game. I refereed and gave advise and hints to all sides as I explained rules and tactics. This was the very first tabletop miniatures game any of them had played.
Viridian
2x sqds of 8 Marines (1 chaingun & 1 rocket launcher)
2x Mortar Teams
1x sqd of Shock Marines
Junkers
1x Enforcer
1x Salamander Cannon
2x sqds of 9 Convicts w/Flamers
1x sqd of 5 Suicide Bombers
VASA
1x Shogun Bird of Prey
1x sqd of 4 Black Legion
2x sqd of 8 Marines (2x chainguns)
Syntha
2x HK2000 grav bikes
1x sqd of 5 Marines (1x sniper)
1x sqd of 6 Assault Androsynths
1x sqd of 5 Tactical Androsynths (1x plasma cannon)
Plenty of low hills and some trees, 3ft x 5ft board.
The Viridian & Junkers players stayed on the defense, mostly, making only minor moves and barely getting half their force out of the deployment zone even through six turns. It was an extension of the personalities of the players themselves, and though it made for boring "gunline" play, they ended up with the win.
VASA and Syntha players were more aggressive. Despite being more calculating in their moves, they still made some bad tactical choices that ended up costing them the game. Allowing themselves to be intimidated by the Suicide Bombers (actually a very fragile unit), and the Syntha player squandering the substantial firepower of his Tactical Androsynths (arguably the best all-around shooter/weapon combo in all factions) by not moving them into good firing positions.
Next time, I'll mix it up more, make the players switch teams and alliances, make it "objective-oriented" and introduce them to the fun of Behemoths, Terrasaurs, Grav Tanks, Marauder Buggies, more Birds of Prey & give them each a hero character to be their general
