I think the title explains it all.
What base size does Command Decision use?

Dynaman878902 Mar 2013 12:08 p.m. PST

3/4 inch for standard size
1 1/4 by 3/4 for "double" size (to hold a gun model)

Tanks are unbased in 15mm.

Although any reasonable size stands can be used.

Like most rules, there is flexibility in basing. For 15/20mm the rules recommend .75" square for infantry and .75" x 1.25" for double-sized heavy weapons. Guns are generally unmounted so the crew can leave the gun. Vehicles are unbased.

I know people who use larger bases for 20mm with no problems. My micro-armor is based on 1.25" square bases. Accommodating different base sizes has never been a problem in our CD games.

I hope this helps.

CD will work with pretty much any basing scheme. I use 3cm square for 15mm infantry figures and 4cm square for ATGs and artillery. Don't sweat the basing too much.

CD is very flexible with basing. The basic rule of thumb,is to pick the base size that allows you to put two infantry stands in the back of your medium trucks. The original base sizes,in CD I were based on the size of a Roco Opel Blitz.

RexMcL02 Mar 2013 4:51 p.m. PST

I use 1" square for 20mm figures, I found the 3/4" size recommended in the book looked a bit cramped at this scale. Some odd size figures like prone AT rifles etc. get a slightly longer base.

I use Flames of War "small bases" and mount two figures per base. Long ways for "rifle" stands and short ways (more depth) for "weapons/MMG" stands.

They still fit in the back of halftracks and two bases will fit in a truck model. (Presuming of course you use 20mm.)

How about standard FOW basing ? Does that work ?

yankincan09 Mar 2013 12:17 p.m. PST

The rules say no rebasing required. I still base mine on the original size of 5/8"X7/8" for the standard element. I just have to make sure i dont bunch them up!

Is this Command Decision Over the top rules?

Garret050726 Mar 2013 8:40 p.m. PST

@Guthroth,

Pretty much any basing size will work, just keep both sides to the same basing. I've seen people use FOW small bases, 20x20mm bases, 25x25mm bases, and others.

@warwagon6,

This applies for basically any version of Command Decision – the current iteration is Command Decision:Test of Battle.

warwagon627 Mar 2013 4:06 a.m. PST

Do they use the same set of ruies for WWI and WWII? I played over the top years ago and it was WWI

Howdy,

The same base rules, the fourth edition, Command Decision – Test of Battle, for both; same base sizes. There are some modifications to reflect differences in the periods. No tactical radios, for example. The modifications for WW1 are in the Death of Glory – France 1914 scenario book.

So what is the rule for cavalry I plan to use cossacks

Ponder Supporting Member of TMP05 Sep 2013 5:45 a.m. PST

Howdy,

In summary, cavalry stands do not have ranged fire capability, but do move faster. In the WW1 books they dismount to patrol stands which can fire (and which could be combined for an infantry stand). All in all, a cavalry regiment (w/4 squadrons) has about one-half the combat power of an infantry battalion (w/4 companies). Nearby mounted cavalry provides a morale penalty to the enemy, more so on the flank. I find cavalry fun to play.

There's a scenario set in the Lorraine from the France 1914 book where a German cavalry regiment and horse gun battery attempt to delay the march of a French infantry regiment. "A surprisingly fun scenario," said one player at Nashcon last year. The disparity in numbers (3:1 numbers, 6:1 strength) gave him pause at first. Maneuver makes for a better game.

I remounted my CD armies (2omm figures) on 40x40 bases as I like to play Crossfire as well. No impact on play, unless you consider not being able to bunch up for your opponents artillery impact templates a bad thing. You can see the look it presents in a recent game posted on my blog.

What is the number of troops per base?

Ponder Supporting Member of TMP16 Sep 2013 10:49 a.m. PST

Howdy,

It varies – typically, 1 to 2 figures. You can use whatever works for you.

Rules as written have square bases, 3/4 inch per side for infantry stands. This works well with 2 15mm figures per base. I often boost crew served weapons stand to 1 inch square so the weapon & crew fit well. I use Artillery and Cavalry at 1-inch by 1-1/4 inch stands.

I note, and probably not for the last time, base size should be consistent, but other than that is very flexible. I used to use 1-inch by 1/2 inch bases with 4 to 5 figures with 5mm (1/300 – 1/285) size figures with microarmor.
