Is it Battalion or Company?

Each stand/element in the game is a platoon, which are organised into companies. You will usually be commanding at least a battalion sized force.

As above, the elements are platoons. Seems to work best with players commanding a battalion (or two or three, with practice).

As noted above, a starting player should "command" a Battlaion/Task Force. Each stand is a platoon, 2-5 stands a company. A Battalion has a nice mix of stands (weapons systems) and enough "things" to move around and keep track of.

If you can easily work with grouping things after a few games you should be able to handle 2-3 Battalions and support troops

I try to keep newbies to 3 or 4 command stands. Experienced players can handle more. However in almost all cases, "more" means more time required to do a move.

Is CD very different from SPEARHEAD?

robpask, IMHO yes. Spearhead is limited to D6 and seems to have a German Bias. CD has a broder range of results and has a great deal of the game infulenced by troop Quality, no matter whose troops.

Yes. Spearhead Morale and unit quality rules are far simpler. Basically roll to see if a unit dies after X casualties. CD has rules where a group can break and run without taking a hit and then come back after being rallied. (good troops would very rarely do this but conscripts do it often)

Spearhead has a different focus… and makes some very "interesting" generalisations. (Why are my Ost Volks so good compared to other nations best?)

CD is more tactical and allows greater variety in troop quality, morale, organisation and equipment.. with the game importance of each in that order IMO (ie quality is most important). The rules are a bit more detailed – so start with a small battalion of good quality troops (Exp 8) vs a large battalion of average quality (Reg 8) and see how it plays out. (Both should mainly be infantry – perhaps a company of armour to each)
