Hammer films rock!

Prince of Darkness also was great.

Stretching a little would be the episode if Friday the 13th the Series with the cursed coin. Something like Heads you Die, tails I live?

Coelacanth27 Feb 2013 6:27 a.m. PST

"Curse of Frankenstein" – I like all of the Hammer Frankensteins that I've seen (Curse, Revenge, F. Created Woman), but the first is my favorite. Stars the magnificent Peter Cushing as Baron Frankenstein.

"Ginger Snaps" – low budget Canadian film about two adolescent sisters, one of whom is attacked by a werewolf. The visual effects are nothing special, but the writing is excellent. Emily Perkins and Catherine Isabelle star as the sisters.

"Re-Animator" – a cheeky re-telling of an H.P. Lovecraft story. There's buckets of gore, quite a bit of nudity, and a macabre sense of humor. Stars Jeffrey Combs and the adorable Barbara Crampton.

Too many to mention. I guess I like movies that shake up the genre and do something different. Most recently I enjoyed "A Cabin in the Woods". Other favorites are "Near Dark", "Evil Dead 2", "Aliens", and "Predator".

The Wicker Man (do I need to say – the original ?? )
The Devil Rides Out
Captain Kronos – Vampire Hunter
Cat People (original)
Dusk to Dawn

Recall really enjoying The Dunwich Horror – but haven't seen it in years (not available on DVD in Region 2!!!!)

"To the Devil a Daughter" is another good one.

There have been a few recent Occult Horror films that are worth watching: "The Shrine", "Wake Wood", and "Outcast".

jfleisher27 Feb 2013 7:24 a.m. PST

+1 for Prince of Darkness

I also really like Lord of Illusions

Meiczyslaw27 Feb 2013 7:25 a.m. PST

The first version of the Exorcist I saw: edited for TV, and viewed on a black & white set. It's really creepy when your brain has to fill in the details.

I have no clue whether the cut is available any more.

Pictors Studio27 Feb 2013 7:31 a.m. PST

Exorcist III. There are so many creepy scenes in that movie.

For a funny one Jeepers Creepers, but that may have been because I was watching it with my friend and his now wife. I would say that she doesn't like horror films although she makes them infinitely better. What was funny to the rest of us was, seemingly, terrifying to her and she spent most of the movie with her hands over her eyes.

21eRegt27 Feb 2013 7:37 a.m. PST

Army of Darkness
Aliens
Young Frankenstein

These are the ones that when I'm channel surfing, I stop.

chuck05 Fezian27 Feb 2013 8:47 a.m. PST

How could I forget The Thing(1982) and Dog Soldiers? Thumbs up to both of those too.

Martin Rapier27 Feb 2013 9:09 a.m. PST

Favourite horror would be 'The Wicker Man', really a unique film in so many ways.

More on the occult side, probably Jacques Tourneurs 'Night of the Demon'. So much so that one of my unfortunate children is named after one of the protagonists:).

Well, it was my turn to pick a name.

For sheer terror 'The Thing' (1982 version ideally seen in the Odeon in Wood Green with the entire audience screaming) and 'The Blair Witch Project'. Not many films keep me awake for two nights.

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP27 Feb 2013 9:11 a.m. PST

For those who suggested "Night of the Demon" and "Blood on Satan's Claw", Bravo! Those are great Occult Horror flicks.

Though really there are too many that I like, I can't choose!

Aliens is not a horror movie!! It's a roller coaster movie.

Now, the original Alien, that's your classic, hounted house horror movie.

skippy000127 Feb 2013 10:20 a.m. PST

Any film with Peter Lorre, Vincent Price and Boris Karloff.

The original 13 Ghosts-scared the yell out of me when I saw it as a kid, 3d glasses and all.

Talking of horror/cult films one sticks in my mind Anti christ! with William Defoe. That was one mixed up film, instant cult hit!

Cardinal Ximenez27 Feb 2013 4:36 p.m. PST

REC – Creppy ending.

Any Vincent Price flick.

Major Mike27 Feb 2013 5:10 p.m. PST

Shadow of the Vampire with William Dafoe. It is an interesting take-off on the 1922 film Nosferatu.

Katzbalger27 Feb 2013 5:21 p.m. PST

In addition to many of the above, and while not a great movie, I did enjoy Lair of the White Worm.

Rogzombie Fezian27 Feb 2013 5:37 p.m. PST

Silent Hill

chuck05 Fezian27 Feb 2013 5:59 p.m. PST

The original Hellraiser was a terrifying concept and well done, but it sadly shows its age

Dont worry. At the rate Hollywood's recycling old movies they should have a new one out anytime now.
