I've been collecting some various 6mm minis and am now entertaining the idea of running some Starship Troopers games in 6mm.

For the humans, there's enough variety of figures available to stand in for the Mobile Infantry. I'll probably start with some CinC Solar Empire Marines – standard infantry & support, plus maybe the dreadnaughts as Cougars/Grizzlies.

For the bugs, I'm having a little harder time. I have some Dark Realm Skyth vampire and hespero beasts that could serve as the standard bugs.

Any suggestions for:
Tanker bugs – ? Toy plastic beetles?
Hopper bugs – maybe Dark Realm Leaper Skyth?

Maybe Micromachines on ebay? The Action Fleet plasma bugs should be pretty well to scale with 6mm and the micro machine ones would make for good infant plasma bugs.

Wish I had some more ideas to help you, but as far as I've seen, 15mm right now is exploding with stuff you can use. Khurasan's 15mm tanker beetle thing might work in 6mm since as we see in the movie, that is one giant bug.

Ground Zero Games do a perfect fit for the warrior bugs:

Can't help much on the others, though cheap toys or possibly natural history models might yield something useful?

I am also doing this. I use Gzg walkers and New Israelis (MI) along with Free Cal Tex infantry for Light Armored MI. The Action Fleet Tankers are too big and Micro Machine are too small. Use the middle scale ones. I use one of the Battletech clicks for LAMI.

Hth,

John

Thanks for the suggestions!

Wolfprophet – I'll have to check out the micromachines. I do have some Khurasan's bug, but I figured they would be too big. Now that I have the SEM minis, I can do a comparison. I'll try to post a picture or two.

Captainquirk – I do remember seeing the GZG bugs, but had forgotten about them. Thanks!

John Leahy – I've never bought any GZG minis (6mm or 15mm). Do you have any pictures of your 6mm SST minis?

There were some in the Gzg catalog. The figs I mentioned are spot on for how they looked in the animated series. The walkers are different but still quite cool.

I did make one mistake. The Free Cal-Tex figs are what I use for 15mm SST. I use Adler 6mm infantry for the LAMI.

Thanks,

John

Here's a pic of some sample minis.
Left to Right: Khurasan 15mm Parasachnid bug, 2xCinC SEMarines, Dark Realm Skyth Hespero Beast, 2xCinC SEM Dreadnaught, Dark Realm Skyth Hespero Beast, Khurasan 15mm Parasachnid bug. Background is Khurasan's tank bug.

The Parasachnid bugs seem a little too big, but they may work for the time being. The big tank bug is really big, but may work well enough for me.

Gaming budget is very limited, so big, new purchases are out of the question. I do like the looks of GZGs mini-bugs though.

Pendraken make a lovelly 10mm bug ideal for a flamer.

stroezie27 Feb 2013 2:55 a.m. PST

Here's a shot of my bug force, small bugs are GZG, large bugs are Rebel minis. They are from the original 28mm Starship trooper line but I think they work well enough.

Are more 'bugs' needed in 6mm?

Yes, SEM are prefect for those !

sharkbait27 Feb 2013 5:56 p.m. PST

stroezie – those 28mm large bugs don't look too bad. I do like those GZG mini-bugs.

For now, I'm probably going to go with the 15mm bugs from Khurasan. I don't care to exactly match the Arachnids from SST, but do want to retain the "flavor", if that makes sense.

stroezie27 Feb 2013 11:50 p.m. PST

@ AB, more bugs in 6mm is always better ;-))

@ sharkbait, retaining the flavour makes perfect sense to me, I tried to do the same thing with my forces.
If you're going to go for the Khurasan stuff, make sure to check out the bug deal,be advised that Khurasan is on hiatus at the moment so you'll have to wait a little before you can order anything.
Btw. which models are you going to use for the troopers?

What sort, big, little, legged, crawly, flyerryry?

captainquirk28 Feb 2013 4:15 a.m. PST

It's hard to find good flying bugs in any scale

Michael,
All of those types wink Lots and lots of all of 'em evil grin

stroezie28 Feb 2013 7:54 a.m. PST

I agree about the flying bugs, definatly not enough of them.
Also no Tyranid/Gigger stuff.
Man sized, as larger can always be found in 15 or 28mm.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Mar 2013 12:24 a.m. PST

Yeah, there is a dearth of 6mm flying bugs.

Thanks,

John

For flyers just buy some of the gzg bugs and give them green stuff wings! perhaps look for some cheap plastic insects and cut the wings off and re-purpose?

Caesar01 Mar 2013 10:43 a.m. PST

Onslaught has got a pack of flyers.

How are you guys handling terrain size with 6mm models?

stroezie06 Mar 2013 9:57 p.m. PST

Build 6mm terrain?
If you are refering to table size for 15 or 28mm rulesets you can either keep it the same and have a more realistic groundscale or you can reduce all the distances and play the entire battle on your lap.;-)

! bought some bug wings for conversion. They were dragonfly like wings in a pack of 20 (10 pairs). I bought them for the Parasdachanids, but havent got around to doing any yet. I think they could be used with the GZG bugs, but they would take some converting as the tabs on the wings for fitting are quite large and would need to be adjusted.

Caesar07 Mar 2013 7:54 a.m. PST

LOL.
I was actually referring to the Mongoose rules and how the size characteristic of models effect their ability to move through terrain. Since the rules were designed with 28mm models in mind and therefore size is determined by inches, I wanted to see what others are doing regarding that.

stroezie07 Mar 2013 2:50 p.m. PST

Well in that case you could try 1 inch = 1 centimeter.
If you're going from 28mm to 6mm this would give you the best of both worlds. You would more or less reduce your table size by half and still have about double the space between each model.

sharkbait07 Mar 2013 6:06 p.m. PST

I will using the 1 in = 1 cm for my SST games in 6mm.

Wargaming Resources09 Aug 2014 9:37 a.m. PST

I'm using THW 5150:SA and I'm going to try a 1:4 scale for movement and weapon ranges using 6mm figures from GZG. I'm aiming for "Two Foot Wargaming" i.e. playing on a 2' x 2' table, which gives me effectively a 96" range with units often having an equivalent 48" weapon range…

One thing I'd like – The Heavy Dropship from the TV series in 6mm
