Hi. I built WW2 armour & kits for about 20 years, and one of the rules I remember was that Germans didn't put crosses on softskin vehicles. I don't remember any in photos, and kits didn't come with them.

I mentioned this to a fellow gamer, and realized, maybe I'm wrong or remembering it wrong.

Does anyone have any photos of (non-captured) softskins with crosses on them?

Thanks!

Yes, very rare, despite Hollywood paintjobs to the contrary.

In the later scenes of 'Men Against Tanks' there is a highly unsual kubelwagen roughly daubed with SS runes on the doors, but it gets run over by a T34 so it doesn't really matter. (Hilariuously it gets pushed into he middle of the ad-hoc barricade, so perhaps it was unserviceable).

I think the only ones they did paint on were the stolen/acquired ones from allied armies.

Hallo,

Here is the Rule: the Balkenkreuz is ONLY for combat vehicle. Therefore not for Transports like Trucks or PKW. A Opel Blitz from the support Unit does not get a cross, but the Blitz with a Flak Vierling gets one. So it depends on the combat status and not on the armor class. A Bergepanther or Bergetiger does also get no cross. This is analogue the convention of Geneva to indicate "Kombatanten Status".

It is done wrong most of the time in movies were gray trucks get crosses.

The Balkenkreuz gets also smaller in 1943 and disappears in 1944 very often on the vehicles with 3 colour camo. It is used on captures "combat vehicle" in huge sizes. Captures Non-combat vehicles are not marked or only with a red political flag to prevent friendly aerial attacks… But this was in 1944-1945 also less and less needed…

I hope this helps.

Greetings and have fun
