Here is a fun little clip from the Horse Soldiers, with John Wayne, a nice stirring rendition of The Bonny Blue Flag:

Always a favorite. I'd swear though that I've seen a version that at the end had the "Holy Joe" stop at the fallen tree and weep (presumably with gratitude that no one was killed).

Many are not aware that the classic movie "The Horse Soldiers" was based on the actual exploits of Grierson's Raid in 1863. But the actual Jefferson military school at nearby Natchez, MS had closed due to the war before Grierson came calling. The Jefferson buildings, now a museum, were location for the filming of those scenes. Director John Ford wanted to include that scene as a tribute reminiscent of the charge by VMI cadets at New Market.

BTW, we are going to play the Grierson's Raid scenario at Cincycon this upcoming weekend. (scenario featured in CHARGE issue 30)

Great movie and I love the scene with the cadets. Of course they're not using any drill manual from the ACW era that I'm aware of :)

IIRC, Grierson had been a piano teacher before the war, so somewhat unlike Wayne's railroad engineer who had worked his way up from tracklaying.
A very entertaining film that probably bears the same resemblance to the historical event as Zulu does to Rorke's Drift…
Surely at that time officers would duel, not strip to shirt sleeves for a fist fight? I recall Wayne throwing down his gauntlet to Fonda in Fort Apache.

Grierson was from my home town. He's buried there and there's a Grierson Day every summer with a lot of reenactors. Great fun!

Grierson later got routed at Brice's Crossroads and post-war was Colonel of the 10th Cavalry – or was it the 9th?

Tenth. And commanded it well into the 1880s, IIRC.

Grierson also hated horses. He had been kicked in the head by one as a youth. If memory serves, while John Wayne's character was a former railroad engineer, Grierson had actually taught piano before the war…

Not only that, Newton Station was one of the few places the raiders passed through where there wasn't a battle! Oh, and they kept their horse artillery with them too…..
