The worse habit of all has to be being critical of other peoples painting. That really gives me the grain. If somebody has made the effort to paint some figures and have a game with you that should be good enough. I saw this on an old poll post and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this sort of annoying behavior. I have the shakes real bad, and catarachts (spelling) so I use simple gloss painting with a minimum of minutia. buttons, lace etc. (even musket barrels) If I tried to do all that some seem to believe to be required, my troops would look like Pollock paintings. so what, my Crimean War and ACW are glossies 15s. I have had people say, oh, you should put more work on those. they look like 3/4 inch tall Britains. so what.? |

If somone has attempted to paint their army, I compliment them on their efforts, even if the figures look like they were "painted" by a three year old. I happen to paint better than some and much worse than others, that's just how it is. But, if gamers put down unpainted models, I am Ming the Merciless when it comes to disparaging them. If I am running the game, their armies receive penalties to morale, to shooting, and to saves, or command rating if needed, assuming I let them even play. The local FLGS put on a 40k tournament recently, of about 12 players. Exactly one army was mostly painted, the rest were not even primed. My mates and I were playing Warmaster, with fully painted 25mm armies, and we were somewhat vocal about the unpainted figures we were seeing on the tables. My own troops refuse to fight against unpainted opponents. They declare a moral victory and climb back into the box. |

I've never had that happen but I think my first response would be "so you'll be done repainting them in a week?" If they're painted then there shouldn't be a beef unless the other person is offering to fix them up for you. Not everyone has the same level of painting for many reasons. |

I freely admit what I paint is crap but it is better than no paint at all (I am a big believer in the 2 foot rule) I dont mind if better painters offer their tips and tricks I want to improve one of the reasons why I come to this board what steams me is when my minis disparaged by a non painter hey, at least I'm trying! |

It can get irksome when a poor paint job is presented as better than it really deserves but generally I try and keep my comments positive and constructive. I try but don't always succeed !!! Part of the issue is that some poeple do not have a particularly wide compass of experience so genuinely don't know what is possible. Ignorance isn't cured by insults or carping criticism but by constructive comment and advice, should it be requested. The standard I set is if the user is happy with it then that is fine by me and I consider them painted to an appropriate standard. Totally irrelevant if they don't match up to some other 'standard'. |

'If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all' as my grandmother used to say. |

I have always believed in the ' As long as I am happy with them' approach I dont really worry about what others say |

"If you can't say something nice, then come sit by me." as my grandmother used to say. I only have one rule – no unpainted lead. But for that, if it's good enough for the owner, it's good enough for me. |

Justin, I would LOVE to do Britonians, but I swear I would be the ONLY GUY who would actually paint a full warhammeeeee army. I cant stand that grey plastic and raw metal, come on,
I wonder why fantasy guys are more apt to do that? (from my experience) |

I understand it in the case of WHFantasy. You need to paint HOW MANY models to field the army? But I'll play against a guy who's got mostly unpainted as long as every week there's progress on another unit. I try to offer constructive criticism to people, even painters far better than myself (yes, I freely admit it). Painting is part of the hobby, and not painting at all is unacceptable. And oddly enough, I went from a 'good enough' 40k/Fantasy/Warmahordes painter to a 'all gotta be painted well' historicals painter. I 'had to' delay the start of a campaign until I had all the troops painted! |
