Dear All,

There has been some chatter recently about how good Minifigs 15/18mm are for SYW, so I was inspired to take a look at their website. However there seems to be a dearth of March Attack figures for Prussian, Russian and Austrian Musketeer figures. Would either the French or British March Attack figures be acceptable stand-ins?

I'm look for advice from anyone whose painted them up as other nationalities, and, given the scale, has accepted minor differences, please, rather than generic comments about their gaiter straps would be COMPLETELY the wrong texture etc, etc.

Are there any major howlers like completely different size tricorns, plumes, accoutrement, etc?

Broglie20 Feb 2013 2:46 a.m. PST

Why not look at Old Glory. Their march attack poses are quite good.
Eureka are also good although the French are strolling rather than marching.

Sparker..short answer no as it is the usual obvious problem of the cuffs, then hair style, then the hat pom-pom /side bobs, then the cut of the coat and ..the differences go on..

plumes are mighty uncommon in the SYW. The very question you ask would be thought of as "a howler" in many circles

Sparker, I would second Broglie's advice, but if you are attached to Minifigs, and for whatever reason, pose is more important to you than full historical accuracy, then I really can't see major obstacles to painting British as Prussians for example (paint in a long black queue down the back, and the grenadier cap fronts as metal), and French as Austrians (even a lack of turnbacks could be explained as winter uniforms). Happy to elaborate as required.

For larger figures it would be a problem, but with 15mm ones at three feet, one gets away with a multitude of sins. The main thing is to get gaming after all!

Now I'd better hide from the Inquisition hit squad that His Eminence will be sending round…

I think GFI in the US used to offer some conversions that covered some of the gaps in the UK range. So I guess we can live in hope that one day they may become available again

I have many Minifig figures from the SYW range and personally did not find it find it inconvenient that they were not all in the march attack pose. I personally would not sacrifice accuracy in figure depiction for the sake of a specific pose. However, if this is really that important to you then you can mix in Old Glory as suggested or Frei-Korps 15 figures which are close in size with Minifig. I would just not mix them within the same regiment if possible.

Thanks Musketier, thats sufficient for me to do some more research when the time comes…Actually I think the range covers my needs in Grenadiers and Fusiliers, its just with the musketeers theres a gap, but if its correctable with the paintbrush thats fine!

Thanks for the advice on other companies, I was already aware of the excellent Eurekas series, but as I'm forced to do this side project on the cheap then minifigs is the obvious option…

Circles I would therefore rather steer well clear of!

- You say pompon/side bob – I say plume!

well you have answered your own question, if you don't like what you hear don't ask.

Yes,GFI had a local designer to add to the range. Prussian Musketeers, Fusiliers and Grenadiers were available in March-Attack and advancing poses; drummers with drums being played, not slung; NCOs and officers on foot with sponsons; more French and British cav types; more arty crew poses; more mounted officers for all countries; and more poses for Grenz; etc. Altogether some 54 additional sculpts/conversions.

About 40% were in production molds when I left for Germany, 3 years ago, as I had a special interest in seeing them put into production. Unfortunately, they remin in storage for the time being. Since they are all made from 3rd generation Minifigs, I can no longer make them as i no longer have licensing agreements nor a working shop! WHEN I get a return job from here, I will sort them out and might offer them to Caliver.

As far as I know, there are very, very few sales made in those last two weeks when I started advertizing them. A few do have some examples out there. I will need to check my box of bare metal I brought over to paint and see if I can do up some pictures of what I brought over. Here, 20mm is the scale of choice for SYW, so my 15mm Prussians remain for the time when the "bug" hits to expaand the army again in that scale.

But yes, Sparker, they do indeed exist. Don't let others chide you out of enjoying Minifigs! Afterall, it is your hobby, your money and your army no matter who's figs you like!

Thanks Tom. As this is a bit of a 'backburner' project I will wait and keep an ear to the ground…

and Freikorps look good, I remember 20 years ago having a lot of these and very nice they were..however for good or bad , they are not minifigs

Thanks Cardy, but they're not really my thing – for some reason I can paint minifigs really quickly and effectively as the sculpts are so well defined, and I would want to churm out a couple of armies in a hurry…

understood..somebody mentioned OG..some nice pics of their offerings here..thanks to the Grimsby Pals
