Hi all!
This is my painted collection of 1870-71 30mm flats thus far… Still a stack of casts to paint up before I have a valid escuse to order some more. Not much of a wargamer to be honest, but I do hope to start Black Powder once a few more figures are painted, along with some full 3d artillery pieces. Hope you like them!

Nice start!

You should visit the fair in Kulmbach and buy some more… Visit the Plassenburg Flats Museum!

You will love it.

Greetings

They look wonderful. Really nice work and its good to see something 'different' being presented.

Very well done! I've dabbled with flats from the syw era since the 70's. To me there's not anything out there that captures the peroids better than flats that have been finished with detailed art work (such as yours).

Flats are a great place to start. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the patience to get my technique down to painting these figures. The 3D is better for the lazy painter in me.

Rudi, one of my regrets is that I wasn't older when I lived in Germany. I even went back as a college student and STILL didn't visit some of the museums I should have. Unfortunately, it looks like I will have to wait until my kids are grown and away, unless my son takes an interest in history and gaming at some point ;-)

Make sure you visit Kulmbach on a uneven year…. When this happens:

The fair is held on the premises of the kulmbach Oktoberfest. That should be enough to convince everyone to come with you to bavaria in october.
:))))

That's a superb bit of painting – I do like flats, bit different and nothing wrong with that !

Gorgeous pieces, each one a work of art.

Great figures, always loved looking at painted flats and of course this is a great period to showcase them, keep up the great work.

Nice blog to, it's good to see some one else crazy enough to convert figures from various scales for the Franco-Prussian War!!

Saw them also at the IFFS forum. Not your conventional shading jobs but bold coloration and contrast, almost a cartoon style – I like it. Really well done, Bani.

Thanks everyone! Flats are indeed quite different, but if you see the ones painted in oils you'll see mine are nothing spectacular ^^ (I use acrylics). I was originally attracted to flats because of the history they hold, the variety of different figures available for every subject, and of course, the affordibilty of 28-30mm flats compared to 'full' 3 dimensional figures of the same scale.
@Rudi
Thanks, I do plan on visiting Kulmbach, but for the next three or so years I'm tied down at university here in Australia. :'( For the moment I source flats from online editors

@ancientsgamer
You're right about the time it takes to paint flats- I only manage one or two each weekend (with 3D 28mm wargaming figures, I usually get away with drybrushing practically everything!)

@Marslatour
I can see from the username that we share the interest, and it's also comforting for me to know I'm not alone as a fan of this gravely underappreciated period! Do you have a blog? :)

Once again, many thanks to all for the kind words! Bani

nice! i like the almost-illustration style of the coloring.

One of the things I really love about flats is the variety in painting styles. So many of the round gaming miniatures that come out now seem to demand the same paint job…that same three colour shading scheme.

I'm sure flats have there own tried and true techniques but, they seem to bring out a distinct flair in every painter.

These are outstanding.

I remember as a kid a store selling flats. Took me right back there.

These ARE outstanding.

Fantastic paint jobs. As Cooey2ph said, it really captures the look of prints from the time.
I'm now a fan of your blog!
Cheers
