The re-basing and general adding to of my Victorian fleets continues. Just a quick post to show some more navwar pre-dreadnought/ironclads. Hopefully I'll be getting a game in at the weekend at last… so ill probably have a battle report next week to post.

Does anybody have any good scenarios with a sort of convincing back story for a late 1880's naval clash involving France, Great Britain and possibly turkey and Italy?

Wow Ben, great work as usual! I don´t have much before the Admiral class, but this tempts me very much! I really like the island in the background too. grin

About a scenario, I don´t have any concrete ideas, but perhaps you could throw something together connected to Britain´s influence in Egypt. Maybe French sour grapes from the Suez Canal shares deal have finally brought forth some sour wine, or maybe that should be whine.
And maybe even Turkey and Italy are sore at Britain for putting their Imperial nose too far into North Africa, and have aligned themselves with France to take on the RN. Okay, not likely, but it could be fun.

Beautiful work as always, and definitely want to see more of that island!

Scenario wise – you've always got the British bombardment of Alexandria:

and with a bit of a squeeze and moving it back in history a few years, you could always design something around the Italo-Turkish War:

or for that matter, the blockade of Crete / Greco Turkish War – just speed dialled back in a time a bit!

Thanks guys, I'm slowly getting through them and resisting the urge to get distracted and sidetracked by other projects….. He says whilst ignoring the two type 22 frigates on the painting table.

Texas- I'm working my way up towards the later ships, at the mo royal sovereign is the most modern for the RN that i have so far. But I do have USS Indian and SMS Brandenburg, got to love the looks of those two ships.

I think scenario wise you both got me thinking along the same lines. There is plenty of scope in the breakup of the Ottoman Empire / British involvement in Egypt, Cyprus and Crete combined with French and Italian imperial ambitions to brew something interesting up at the end of the med.

I was thinking along the lines of a standoff off the cost of a key strategic island (haven't decided which yet) between the France with Italian support and the British over who has the best interests of the islanders at heart. This breaks down in to a fight leaving the Turkish ships to pile in on the side that looks most beneficial to them… a little fancifully but could be fun and I like the random element of the Turkish support….. I'll let you know how it go's

Oh and the island is left over blue foam "librated" from the model making cupboard at work, hacked about a bit then dry brushed. Turned out ok for a quick job, the static grass looks a bit odd though. Going to add some bits of green painted sponge for trees when I get round to it.

I wouldn´t worry about how fanciful your scenario is, as long as you get to play with your ships how you like!

A few years ago I had great fun with a pre-dread tournament between the the ten more or less great fleets of the era. There were something like five basic tasks a fleet had to undertake each round (shore bombardment, patrol, convoy escort, mine laying, and mine sweeping) and each round was against a different opponent, for a total of nine rounds for the complete game.
It took quite a while to play all nine rounds, but in the end the RN won, mainly due to size of fleet. The USN gave them a run for their money though. Spain was knocked out of the game about half way through and was left with no ships at all. The variety of it all was really fun, made for some interesting moments.

I wish my work had a model making cupboard!

Sounds like a fun way to do a tournament to me, Poor old Spain. a RN USN match up sounds like a good excuse to use some great ships against each other.

The model making cupboard is a definite plus, it's usually well stocked with card and blue foam.
