When it comes to the Gallic Wars, I get stuck with the larger batttles in mind; Bibracte, Sambre, Alesia. In 28mm this would require space and miniatures in large quantity, both of which I do not have. Need help thinking outside the box. Have about 90 Gauls, and 64 Romans, misc aux, baggage, etc… Teutoburg was in 9ad, a little to late. Other scenerio ideas please……?

I use Charles Grants scenario books just substitute units for 4, 6 or 8 figures. Leave out the artillery all together or call a battery a single bolt thrower. Doing this tuns all the battle scenarios into large skirmish games.

Caeser mentions the attacks on Sabinus and Cotta including the ambush. One of the mags (WI I think) covered something like the latter. Also a few large skirmishs in Britain. I also recall that Caeser sent at least one Lt. off with a legion or so to do some "minor" conquering.

"Bathtub" some of the large battles? So if several legions were present, make it several cohorts, and adjust the opposition accordingly.

Drop it down and have the Romans collecting taxes and getting ambushed in the village or when leaving……

……or escorting the governor's daughter to meet her father……..

…..or a group of engineers dismantling an old temple/shrine to build a road, thereby upsetting the locals.

Aside from the examples mentioned, just pick up JC's Gallic War and browse through. Here are just a couple of examples of the kind of stuff you could very easily adapt to a game:

VI.8: Labienus vs the Treveri.

VI.35 & on: Atuatuca – Cicero's foragers attacked outside their camp by raiding Germans.

VII.32 & on: Gergovia – perhaps trying to extricate men who have gone over the ramparts into the town. Certainly plenty of potential for small-unit actions.

Bk VIII has some interesting mopping-up operations.
