Hmm…I never noticed before, but there's no 'gallery' board for this genre like there is for WW2 or modern, so I guess this is the only place to put this…

Just an excuse for some cyber ego-stroking, really…that, and a demonstration that 'crazy is what crazy does'. It was noted on a previous thread that there were no RE-8s available from Shapeways in this scale, so…well…I just went and scratchbuilt a flight…

The crazy part comes when the fact that I don't game in this scale is considered. Oh well…

Beautiful word there. I have scratch built 1/144 but nothing quite this small!

Very impressive, what materials do you use?

Great job.

Materials =
Styrene for the fuselage (.10"x.125" stock), wing/tail surfaces (.020" sheet- actually a 'for rent' sign from the hardware store…) and air scoop/gun bodies/ammo drums (teeny-wee strip stock).

Brass wire (.010", .016", .020") for the various struts, exhaust stacks, scarf mounts, and gun barrels.

Crew are (very roughly) carved/hacked 'reductions' of some 1/300 WW2 guys (H&R).

My ten thumbs and I are in awe.

Hi Don

The look bleeping fantastic. Now you have no excuses for not starting a 1/350 collection.

They look much better than my pair of old RE8s hacked out of balsa wood:

A couple of questions:
Are there mounting holes in the nose ICOG style or a mount under the belly?

I looks like the wings are sanded in profile?

"Now you have no excuses for not starting a 1/350 collection."

Yeah, I do: no one has bought my 1/300 stuff yet! ; )

"…my pair of old RE8s hacked out of balsa wood…"

Wood? What century do you live in? ; )
Seriously: Those are bloody marvelous.

"Are there mounting holes in the nose ICOG style or a mount under the belly?"

Neither – that's up to the new owner to decide.

"It looks like the wings are sanded in profile?"

Not really – just rounded (leading edge) and tapered (trailing edge) a bit. The bottoms are just flat.

PS- Odd, IMO, that the PC-10 color (which is debated as much -if not more- than the hue of any facing) of Svend's models and mine match fairly well. Is this just a strange coincidence, or are we each masters? ; )

Freaking gorgeous work you guys. I love Harry Tates….

It's funny what a non "gearhead" finds out years later. I had not noticed that the BE2 and RE8 had no radiator!? I know, a no-brainer, that one. But I wasn't alone. In a recent game my RE8 took "radiator hits", and I enjoyed saying, "Ahah, becomes a 'no effect' crit". "Huh"? was the response of the Hun player. I pointed to the model and asked him to find the radiator, and then followed up with "I recently read that this aircraft was aircooled, don't be fooled by the lack of a rotary"….

Actually i made those RE8s in another millenium, thus the balsa wood fuselage and cardboard wings… But i refurbished them a couple of years ago.

Agree on the PC-10 … I actually tend to use a much darker PC-10 these days after reading some very long (and very emotional) threads on the aerodrome.

I relation to selling your 1/300 stuff – try contacting William Keyser (wkeyser in here). He is considering restarting his WWI collection for use with Hostile Aircraft… And he just joined the ICOG campaign so he has no need for the 1/350 Shapeways stuff.. We have zillions of planes..

Found one more pic of one of the Tates.. in the process of getting shot down by two Albs (D.V and D.III). low on speed and options..

"…low on speed and options…"

Doesn't that pretty much describe all points of every mission? ; )

GilmoreDK25 Feb 2013 4:14 a.m. PST

heh…. true.. But i forgot: "low on altitude, speed and options"…

Abwehrschlacht03 Mar 2013 2:07 p.m. PST

Amazing, simply amazing!
