What rules sets would you gentlemen recommend for playing 18th Century naval actions in North America? Or on the high seas for that matter? Thoughts on campaign rules sets would be a help as well.

Caliver Books does a series of 18th C Wars of Absolutism which includes naval and campaign rules

Thank you, Broglie. Those look to be good ones. I was considering Too Fat Lardies rules, "Kiss Me Hardy" for the naval battles and 1/1200th as the scale. Do you (or anyone else) have an opinion of those rules?

Broglie14 Feb 2013 3:54 p.m. PST

Sorry LTC Fraiser I know noting of the Two Fat Lardies' rules

They are very good for solo gaming because of the card activation. They are designed more for fleet actions, though since many of the gritty sailing details for deliberately factored out. As they say, you are assumed to be an Admiral, and therefore you don't worry about what shot to fire and how many men to put in the rigging.

I will blow my own horn for a moment, and suggest this for a campaign system:

It was written for the 1793 campaign in the Caribbean, and while it is written for the VBAM campaign system, I tried to make it as flexible as possible so as to let it use other rules for resolving battles and the like. Besides, it's free. Hard to go wrong there, right?

You could try Broadside & Cutlass, see

Thanks to all who replied. Interesting variety of rules, especially the 1793 Campaign ones.

LtC Fraiser,

Will second Kiss Me Hardy as solitiare friendly and a good set. Have not tried Brian Ws campaign but anything he puts out has been good up till now.

Cheers

Joe
