The King's Royal Standard is well known and documented: It is defended by Sir Edmund Verney with his life at Edgehill and the fact that it is blown down the night before the campaign begins, and seen as a bad omen etc.

However, I'm keen to know a little more about Parliament's Standard. Was the Commonwealth Standard carried throughout the Civil Wars? Would it have been present, on the field, as it were.

I am painting a vignette to represent the command for my parliamentarian army, for Pike and Shotte rules, and wondered if the Commonwealth flag could be included.

If so does anyone know who I can buy this flag from for 28mm figures?

Your game, do as you will.

Historically, after the English Civil War and the execution of King Charles I in 1649, the Union of the Crowns (!) became the 'Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland'. The head of state had the title of 'Lord Protector of the Commonwealth'. The first Lord Protector was Oliver Cromwell who ruled from Dec-1653 until his death in Sep-1658.

So not before 1653 – post ECW.

Don't forget for a long time the Parliamentarians' stated aim was to free the King from his bad advisers and make him responsible to Parliament. Therefore they didn't have a flag of their own since that would have been treasonous. As Blues For Baby and Me says it was only after the war that a Commonwealth flag appeared. See here:

I tend to just use a St George's flag for the NMA army standard at the end of the first civil war. No evidence whatsoever to support it but I need to use something and it's easy to paint!

I was not aware of the flag with Cromwell's colours. Thanks.
