Hi all

I'm looking for opinons on how well these rules play at 1 to 1 scale. I see there is a section in the rules (which I don't own) for adapting the game to this scale so I want to see if its worth splashing out on a copy. Do they work well or do they feel more like an afterthought?

Or any other suggestions for 1 to 1 scale moderns games? Not CWC, MSH etc which are 1 to 3/5.

Cheers
Kieran

Technically CWC can be done at 1:1, using squads rather than platoons as the basic infantry element, then the AFVs become singles rather than platoons.

Others have suggested taking the modern boardgame series from Lock-n-Load and converting it to minis.

I've been looking more at using Strike Legion (SF rules), although Dirtside II could work too. I tried the latter but was coming up with too many house rules to fit things into the five levels of weapons and armor it uses; SL has six+ levels which gives a bit more granularity.

I struggle with that one when tanks have multiple hits before they are killed.

I have Strike Legion but the modern rules are a higher level than I would like, otheerwise I think they are great.

Lock n Load and FoF are possibilites but I dont know how well FoF will scale up to company+ sized games.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in that post – I plan on using the original company-per-side SL rules (not Planetary Ops), but ignoring some things like tech levels to get the effects I want as I build the vehicle stats.

I've statted up the tank guns and relative AFV armour for the modern period, just have to put it all together on a vehicle by vehicle basis.

Infantry and their HW are the real pain to work through, but someday I'll get it all done.

I play FFoT3 at 1:1. Plays just fine. Turns quite a large scale game into a much smaller engagement.
It will take some research on your part into correct TO&E, but the best suggestion I've got is to remember that the first thing to go out the window in combat is the force org manual.

I have not played it at 1 to 1 scale but having played it at normal scale and considering the rules for 1 to 1, it should work fine – if not overly detailed for that scale (for good and bad, bad is lack of detail in handling squads, good in that the normal rules are very good).

You can even give it a try, take the lite rules online, halve the cohesion distance given and you are basically playing at 1 to 1. (I don't remember if the lite rules have cohesion, I think they do since it is a major part of the design)

Other rule sets, nearly forgot.

Both are OOP boardgames so not ultramodern.

MBT/IDF from Avalon Hill, covering Modern (ala the late eighties and early nineties) and the Arab Israeli conflicts.

Team Yankee/Test of Arms/Battlefield Europe. First is based on the book, the second is actual battles from history, and the third is hypothetical battles in a third world war. All of these are GDW games in the first battle series.

So whats the main differences for FFT3 1:plat vs 1:1 in the rules? Does it just say you can play it that way?

I dont think the light version has any 1:1 rules in it and thats what I really want to know about.

Thanks for the other suggestions, I'm hoping for something that is accessible to get others interested.

Cheers

That is basically it.
