Hi

Although I've been gaming and painting for more than 40 years, I've never felt the need to own a modelling drill.

Now I need one for a project, but it is unlikely to become a regular feature of my hobby, so which would you recommend ?

Note, I'm in the UK and would rather avoid spending lots for something I might only use once or twice a year.

TIA

Pete

Pin vise. The one GW makes is not bad, actually.

Army Painter brand manual drill. Best tool ever for plastics and metal.
Not very expensive either.

… or do you mean the powered type ?

normsmith12 Feb 2013 6:51 a.m. PST

dremel type, Wilkinsons do a cheaper version around £20.00 GBP to £25.00 GBP

My preference is an Archimedes drill link over a pin vice although I do have more than one of each type with my most used bits in them.

* Note the Maplin Link is not necessary the one I would recommend just a quickly found example.

As with Angel Barracks that's the type I use. I glued a kids rubber ball on the handle end to ease the strain on my palm. Held it in place with some rubberized tool handle coating (actually a sample of paint on truck bed liner). Rob

Get a pin vice.

This type is very cheap on market hardware stalls etc.

I have the Archimedes type but found I needed to grow a third hand to manipulate everything, so it went back in the box.

Gale force nine distribute a pin vice you can probably find or order from many stores. It's not the one I use, but it has a pommel, which like floating white bear describes, is a necessity to have or improvise, if you're going to drill out a batch of hands, or what have you. After drilling two or three holes in metal, you'll want a pommel. (Although maybe the gf9 one seems a bit big, and you can probably find cheaper.)

Hand pin drills are cheap as chips. I have tons of them. Also have a Dremmel – I love it.

I use both the pin vice and the arch. drill, great tools and makes me wonder how I ever managed without them.
