I tried to view Starship Combat News and got redirected to a web ring, what gives?

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian11 Feb 2013 7:29 p.m. PST

Working fine for me.

Try again. I had the same thing happen, but on a second attempt the site came right up.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian11 Feb 2013 8:13 p.m. PST

Working just fine for *moi*….

You are not alone, flooglestreet.

Using Adblock to block everything related to Webring seems to do the trick, though.

It has happened to me too. I am going to do a bit more research on this and if needed, remove the webring coding.

Broadsword12 Feb 2013 7:26 a.m. PST

Thank you!

Andy7314 Feb 2013 5:51 p.m. PST

I still seem to be having issues with going to SCN. Is the site still having problems?

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP15 Feb 2013 9:50 a.m. PST

When reporting the Webring issues, be sure to mention which browser you're using.

My experience is Firefox oft runs afoul of this; I then switch, with loathing, to M$IE, and seems to get around he 'bug'.

Sometimes, with FF, I can hit the 'stop-reload' X and keep from getting passed to the web ring. Sometimes…

Other times, I just curse the ring concept. Tends not to be much use to me any more.

I am using IE. When I try to go to the site, it either sends me to google search or I get an error.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP16 Feb 2013 6:34 a.m. PST

Thanks, Andy. Sounds different than my usual webring issues.

Sounds more like DNS issues; a site has to propagate its information to your local IP so it knows where to look for it.

Dean's provider may have issues in broadcasting that.

Like I really have a clue…

TheStarRanger16 Feb 2013 10:38 p.m. PST

Andy, let me know your IP Address. My host has been blocking IPs with too many connections lately, they even blocked my own IP last week. I can ask then to unblock yours if that is the issue.

Andy7318 Feb 2013 8:10 a.m. PST

Thank you. My address is: 70.106.41.59

TheStarRanger18 Feb 2013 3:54 p.m. PST

I asked and that IP is not blocked.

Their response was "you can contact your website's user and tell him to check this issue with his/hers local ISP provider as there might be an issue with part of their network, which is preventing him/her from accessing our datacenter."

Andy7318 Feb 2013 6:25 p.m. PST

Thank you for looking into it for me. I'll see what I can find out from my end. I'm not sure what happened, one night I'm on, the next day I can't get on. Once again, thank you and hopefully I can get this fixed.

tkdguy17 Mar 2013 11:37 p.m. PST

I haven't been able to access the site at all the last few days. But downforeveryoneorjustme.com says it's up and running. Should I contact my ISP provider?

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP18 Mar 2013 7:46 a.m. PST

star-ranger.com/Home.htm

continues to have crisp, quick response for moi.

Doug

PS Love the 'It's just you.' response. ;->=

thedrake18 Mar 2013 3:18 p.m. PST

Same thing with me--tried from 5 different computers and get sent to google or get error message everytime since last Thursday.

Dean, sent you my IP address too.

Thx,
Mark

jimklein196618 Mar 2013 6:18 p.m. PST

Im not able to get the site to come up either.

StarCruiser18 Mar 2013 8:03 p.m. PST

I've reported this to ATT Uverse support. They checked and one of their routers is definitely blocking the site. I'm not sure if any other ISP has the same issue, but if you are a Uverse customer – that's probably the issue…

They are "working on it" now.

tkdguy18 Mar 2013 9:28 p.m. PST

Google Chrome has the same issue. I tried logging in at work, with the same result.

StarCruiser19 Mar 2013 6:35 a.m. PST

It's not a browser issue. It appears that Star-Ranger got blocked by – at least – AT&T at the router level (World Net).

I'm not sure if that would effect anyone outside of AT&T users.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP19 Mar 2013 6:52 a.m. PST

I'm not sure if that would effect anyone outside of AT&T users.

It's an internet, we're all dependent on who-knows-whom. ;->=

StarCruiser19 Mar 2013 4:14 p.m. PST

Good point!

Deeman20 Mar 2013 8:55 a.m. PST

Can't get on to get my starship fix either. :(

TheStarRanger20 Mar 2013 10:59 a.m. PST

I got word back from my website host's support center. I gave them a bunch of IP's of those of you who could not connect and they had not blocked them so it was the connectivity between your ISP and my host's datacenter and there isn't anything my host can do to fix that.

So if you can not connect, contact your ISP and tell them about the problem and see if they can find the block and get it fixed.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP20 Mar 2013 7:16 p.m. PST

I can't get to it either. And, yes, I'm an AT&T U-verse customer… for now, anyway.
(Kind of POed that they've almost tripled my monthly charges, so I'm considering a switch, if I can find a better alternative than the local version of Comcast, which *sucks* (personal experience).)

thedrake21 Mar 2013 3:42 p.m. PST

So has anyone been able to get ATT to unblock the site for its customers?

If not lemme know as I am about to call them tonite or tomorrow--and have the CEO's number+email if anyone needs it.

Dan 05521 Mar 2013 9:17 p.m. PST

Could one of the people who find themselves blocked post the link that is failing?

tkdguy21 Mar 2013 10:22 p.m. PST

The link to the site itself?

AT&T couldn't fix the problem today. They suggested contacting tier 2 tech help. I'm going to call them tomorrow.

Dan 05522 Mar 2013 8:50 a.m. PST

No, not just the link, but the link that fails. On another thread here about the same problem, the sample link had disappearing hyphens within the link itself.

tkdguy22 Mar 2013 5:25 p.m. PST

It's working for me now. Is anyone still having problems?

tkdguy17 Apr 2013 1:16 p.m. PST

Looks like it's starting again for me. I'll try again tonight and see what happens.

Broadsword17 Apr 2013 2:27 p.m. PST

I'm having issues, as well. It's been over 24 hours. I can get the home page, but anything beyond that results in a time-out error.

StarCruiser17 Apr 2013 2:57 p.m. PST

This time it started more "naturally", slow response time in the morning, followed by no response later. Probably an honest crash this time.

thedrake17 Apr 2013 7:36 p.m. PST

Yep cant get to Star Ranger's site again--really sucks that this keeps happening.

chironex18 Apr 2013 3:21 a.m. PST

Just tried it. Comes up first go. Perhaps it's your browsers or attached security packages? I know one of my browsers at work doesn't let you into the Toofatlardies website, but then I use the other browser- and have to use the first because the service website we use doesn't work on the latter one…

tberry740318 Apr 2013 6:23 a.m. PST

I just tried it with no problems.

I am using Firefox 20.0.1

trynda170118 Apr 2013 6:23 a.m. PST

I'm getting to the homepage and the forums fine just now. I was getting in okay last night as well.

To the folks having problems, where are you? UK, US, elsewhere? I'm in the UK. Maybe we can determine if this is it a local problem?

BThree18 Apr 2013 10:26 a.m. PST

I'm having no joy with Star-Ranger AGAIN. It was ATT before what now? HELP ME…

thedrake18 Apr 2013 11:04 a.m. PST

Nope still cant get in….damn frustrating.

thedrake18 Apr 2013 11:24 a.m. PST

Says it looks down, then says site up--anyone else having same issue?
Or is it ATT again?

tkdguy18 Apr 2013 1:03 p.m. PST

Could be AT&T because I got the same result last time. But they couldn't help me last time I contacted them. It just resolved itself last time.

This time, the Down for Everyone says the site is down.

Does anyone know how to contact Dean?

TheStarRanger18 Apr 2013 1:59 p.m. PST

I'm here. Site is up for me as I just checked and I haven't heard of any other issues.

May be At&T again especially if it is effecting the same people as before.

BThree18 Apr 2013 3:31 p.m. PST

I got an actual human at ATT to walk me through the pinging process and no joy. That was a coupla hours ago but I just checked and still unable to connect. I keep getting this "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." I have PM's to answer and no way to do so.

Broadsword18 Apr 2013 7:10 p.m. PST

Day two, still no love.

thedrake18 Apr 2013 7:24 p.m. PST

Must be ATT as can get to the site on my Verizon phone (bottom end Samsung Intensity 2!) but not thru my web provider--ATT sux!

Covert Walrus18 Apr 2013 8:55 p.m. PST

I keep getting straight there . . . I feel very privileged. And for a change, not ripped off by my telco and the poor cabling in NZ :)

Mako1118 Apr 2013 8:58 p.m. PST

Works just fine for me.

thedrake19 Apr 2013 8:50 a.m. PST

Just got off phone with ATT (after contacting CEO and Board about this issue) and have been told that all ATT customers are having access to SCN blocked due to security threat with web host, possibly due to an "infected machine".

Asked what was being done to fix this and was told that ATT is looking into the security threat and will try to see if it can be removed to allow ATT customers access--which may take up to a week to resolve.

If any other ATT customers need contact info for CEO,Board members,or people I am dealing with in president's office let me know and I will provide info.

Starting to look for another internet provider as this is a bunch of BS………
