The Perry's have a Li Naotaka figure and on their site they mention : "Ii Naotaka (mounted) and 2 standard bearers. His whole army were equipped with red armour and were known as the 'Red Devils " I think they are mistaken and the figure should be Li Naomasa (his father) who's army was known as the "Red Devils" Am I, or are the Perry's mixing things up ? |

Haven't seen the figure so don't know if there's anything unique about it's armour, but Ii Naotaka took over after his father Ii Naomasa was killed. link |

BR, Read your post again and now understand your actual question which wasn't necessarily about the spelling. No intent on being a spelling Nazi. Please accept my apology. Eventually, I think by the time of Osaka, the famed horned helmet was given to Naotaka. So I think the Perry figure is correct. Take a look below: Ii Naomasa link Ii Naotaka link Hope this helps. Yes, Naomasa died in 1602, most likely from wounds taken at Sekigahara in 1600. You should be able to use the same mini for both of them, with Ii Naomasa leading the clan at Sekigahara and earlier, and Naotaka after that (most notable at the Osaka campaigns). |

I was able to get a book on the armour of the Ii 'Red Devils', too late to help with the research I did for the 120mm mounted 'Red Devil' Commander I did for Fort Duquesne. Ii Naomasa's famous horned helmet was copied by his descendants. Each succeeding Ii daimyo had a copy of Naomasa's helmet with slight alterations. I have two versions of Naomasa's helmet. One with white plumes and one without. Naomasa had a hornless helmet worn early in his career. His son Naotaka wore a more elaborate armour to go with the horned helmet. A later generation Ii daimyo had a massive suit of armour with Naomasa's horns COMBINED with a helmet crest that looks like a miniature version of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 'sun burst' helmet crest. Large horns placed at the sides of the helmet bowl were worn by Ii family members. Large horns worn at the front as helmet crests were worn by Ii 'Lieutenants' and 'Generals'. The sizes of the horns varied. For now I am assuming that the higher 'ranking' the individual the larger the horns were, applied to both Ii family members and their vassals. The 120mm mounted Red Devil I did for Fort Duquesne years ago was intended for modellers to easily convert them to represent other clans, with optional helmet crests of other clans. I am currently resculpting the Fort Duquesne figure for myself to depict a samurai that is undoubtedly a 'Red Devil' commander. |
