Good afternoon,

I've been pondering rating the troops for scenarios on the eastern front of the Great War. There seems to be a consistent hierarchy: Germans, Russians, Austrians – a non-cyclic rock, paper, scissors.

In 1914:

So, Gernan regular and reserve units generally rated experienced. Some units (i.e., jager) as veteran. This is consistent with the France 1914 book. Landwehr etc. – trained.

Russians: Mostly trained, some units regular. Not sure of the specific criteria for regular, yet. Artillery – regular.

Austrians: Almost all trained. Artillery – regular. Reserves/militia – green. Perhaps mountain troops as regular.

Morale will I think depend on the scenario, but mostly follow the hierarchy above with higher side as a 9 and the lower as an 8. In some scenarios, I see both sides as 8's.

Other issues: The Russians have consistent problems with supply of artillery, small arms, and ammunition. Thinking to have limited ammunition also as a consistent issue for the Russians in the game.

With artillery this would be per the CD rules as modified in Lorraine scenario of France 1914 book.

When small arms ammo is limited thinking of losing the +1 ROF for opportunity fire. That seems less painful than applying an additional consistent minus to hit.

Thoughts? Comments???

Ponder on,

JAS

I don't know enough about WW1 to comment on the troop ratings, but I was looking into a raid from WW2 where the troops were described as not having much ammunition. My plan was to use the normal vehicle ammo depletion rules for infantry. I haven't run the game so I don't know how it works in practice.
