What are your favourite kind of boats for gaming? Do you like oar driven ships, seeing a bunch of men working together to man handle a ship into a fighting position and then taking their chances as they are rammed or boarded? Do you prefer sailing ships, where the wind has the power in it and the men must harness that power to get their ship to do what they will? Or maybe you prefer powered ships, where some sort of engine drives the ship forward and the men need not rely on the wind to get them where they need to go? |

Ironclads and WWII coastals are my faves, but I have an extensive collection of 1/6000 WWII, WWI and Moderns. I also have all the ship sets for Roman Seas, which really is a fun game despite a couple of glitches in the rules. |

We have played all of the above but mostly do WW I and II these days. |

Have only ever gamed with boats what has motors on them! |

Yes. But then, as my nick indicates, I'm sort of "into" naval gaming

Pictor, I have scratch built/bought/gamed all of the above. Right now I am more into steam driven vessels for 28 mm Colonial/VSF gaming including airships. I do; however have a fondness for the days of Renaissance Galleys which were a combination of both sailed and oar driven. Battles such as Lepanto seem to be the best of both worlds giving you the combination of ancient trireme warfare with sail and cannon tossed in to make for an interesting engagement. |

Depends what my mood is but I'm going to have to go with anything that floats from 1500AD to now. But if I had to be pinned down to one period it would have to be ironclads to pre dreadnoughts i think

I like Pre-Dreadnaughts best, followed by Moderns (waaaay too much computer _Harpoon_ in the 90s) and then "Age of Fighting Sail." I have played Ancients/galleys but not for a long time. |

Galleys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! in every scale. |

Mainly WW2 in 1:3000, though I have used the old Airfix 1:600 ships in the past. I have also dabbled with napoleonic in the past. |

Predreadnaughts by a country mile. Or should that be by a nautical mile? |
Ken Hall | 05 Feb 2013 9:40 a.m. PST |
After dreadnoughts would be sailing ships. Never could warm up to galleys, nor ironclads (though the late pre-dreadnoughts and transitional era -- the Edwardian Steam Navy -- can be fun). |

Coastal actions in WW II. The airplane ruined it for anything bigger and I like WW II in general. I like the age of sail but have not found a set of rules that I love yet. Kiss He Hardy is good but you still have to write down hull hits, I hate that. Joe |

Wooden ships and wind for me, more the better. Rory |

If it floats.. it floats my boat! (yes submarines count – they just float under the sea.. until the Depth charges get them!) |

If it floats
Really like Pre-dreadnoughts though, the ultimate in Steampunk. |

I enjoy it if it floats, which sadly rules out most of the fleets I have commanded

I like all kinds. Budget says WWII at this point. |

Japanese in WW2. I like me some Long Lance torps and the Kitakami class CLs pre-refit. Nothing says 'I love you' like a 20-tube broadside! I really don't like adding aircraft to the mix, at that point I want to play aircraft, the ships are mere targets. Been meaning to build the War of 1812 duels, but haven't had time to work on them. |
Joep123 | 12 Feb 2013 9:54 p.m. PST |
I like WWII Coastal warfare, especially the S-boats and Flaklighters. Right behind them are Pre-Dreadnoughts, 1898 Span-Am War. I have now moved into the Modern stuff and really like the looks of the new ships. Joe |

One aspect of air power that is often overlooked is that weapons loads are inversely proportional to loiter time. An aircraft had one or the other but seldom both, unless the coastal vessels are the primary target. Then there is weather

I like all eras. However, budget limits me at this time to the early Pacific. See if we can beat the Japs at Wake, defend Mindanao, go tooth and nail with them in the Solomons. May even try some interwar action. Might try my hand at scratchbuilding some ironclads. |

Age of Sail, and then jumping to WWII to moderns. Big ships can be fun, but the little ones are usually even more so, especially from WWII on, and if they are armed with torpedoes, or surface to surface missiles. |

Classic Ironclads for modern, and Punic Galleys for anything before 1800. Close second is WWI Battleship (Jutland I can play any day) and Sailing ships of 1800-1815 VR James Mattes |
