my roommate and i use GW's lord of the rings rules for samurai skirmish, and its a blast. there is a lotr varient yahoo group that has very nicely done fan made samurai army lists which include some hero growth and such. you could also use the campaing system from warhammer historicals Legends of the Old West, which is the same as the LOTR sytem, but uses the mordheim camapaign mechanics. |

Check out Two Hour Wargame's generic Chain Reaction Swordplay rules (free): link (I'm also doing samurai skirmish, but at 42mm and using THW's Red Sand Black Moon ((Fantasy gladiator)) rules, which aren't meant for skirmish, but handle 2 or 3 figures per side with a decent level of detail.) |

I haven't tried these rules, but they're also free. Yume no bushi: PDF link |

If you can find it, a copy of Legends of the High Seas would be closer to the technology level of the late Sengoku and Edo-period Japan. Unfortunately, I neglected to save the locations of the things I found, I just have the PDFs. |

Osprey will be publishing Ronin in the second half of the year. It mostly fits your criteria. cheers CW |

I'm a fan of Bushi No Yume from Surfshack Games. PDF available at link It is based on the Song of Blades and Heroes rules and works really. |

Osprey will be publishing Ronin in the second half of the year.It mostly fits your criteria. cheers CW Hi Craig, your rules sound most interesting. Found further details here: link We're a group down in Melbourne, just started buying up Perry's samurai/ikko-ikki etc, about 30-50 figs each, with the intention of using SAGA as a ruleset with the fan-made battleboards for Tokugawa and Ukita clans. We played a couple of games and found these battle-boards a little bit unbalanced, and have been looking around for another ruleset with campaign elements we could use – eg Mordheim, Legends of the
, Songs of
etc Do you have any further details you could supply us on your rules? i.e what sort of numbers are we looking at; what, exactly, are the d6 mechanics you use; what are the dimensions of the tabletop needed; what sort of terrain might be needed etc etc? It's a shame I didn't know about this earlier as we were all up at Cancon this past weekend, playing in different tournaments/wandering around etc, so could have had a chat to you about it then – if you were around. Thanks! |

Didn't know that anything had been announced yet – looks like the cat is out of the bag. You can play with as few as half a dozen figures. It is definitely a skirmish game – although playable with 20 or more figures a side, it will slow the game down a bit. Small tables (900 mm square) are sufficient. As much or as little terrain as you like. I was playing Bolt Action for two days and then ran SAGA on the third day at CanCon. 9 games in three days – you wouldn't have got much sense out of me! cheers CW |

That's great, thanks. It does seem to suit those of us looking for skirmish games with campaign elements, for those short games in the late afternoon – will definitely invest in it when it comes out. Well done on getting Ronin together and published, btw. Yeah, brain was fizzled as well on the third day of Cancon – and I was just wandering around playing participation games. |

im looking for a hero bash sort of game where you name your characters an watch them grow kinda like mordheim "Legends of the Rising Sun" sounds perfect, because it's a samurai (16-17th century) mod for the aforementioned "Legends of the High Seas." I have a pdf which lists warbands, equipment, and special rules, which I'd be happy to share. You would need either LOTHS or LOTOW for the campaign system, though. |

It may sound odd but, "Flashing Steel" from Ganasha Games works well. It's designed for Three Musketeers type action but, there is a lot which ports over to Japan with a simple name change. Particularly fun if you are after some "cinematic" battles. |
