Hi guys, I have recently got two big bags of static grass and, never having used it before, I'd like to know how exactly to stick it. (Not where ha ha ha). I've only ever used flock before.

Thanks in advance!

I use a little crazy glue here and there, dip it, shake it, blow it and then drybrush with an ochre color also known as a mustard type color.

CPT Jake19 Sep 2004 4:10 a.m. PST

I use regular white glue and do the same.

bignormww19 Sep 2004 4:20 a.m. PST

i paint the base green first. then coat it in PVA glue, white but dries clear. immediatly pop it into a box of your static grass.

As a tip, keep your static grass in a plastic container. Prior to use give a good shake to 'charge' the grass to help it stand up.

I asked how to do it at the Gamesworkshop store. Make a water/white glue mix, paint it on where you want it, then swish in your static grass. Blow off the excess. I use mine in patches rather than over the whole base.

mweaver19 Sep 2004 9:13 a.m. PST

I do patches too. I have not tried the drybrushing thing.

ming3119 Sep 2004 10:34 a.m. PST

After All other ground work in place put some White glue ( watered if you like) in areas. Sprinkle with static grass. Blow on grass gently this makes it stand up . After its dry you cand drybrush it .

I use a sprinkle top spice container to put the grass on the piece It seals and helps "align" the grass to stand up.

Don't bother, use sand and paint it green, dry brushed yellow. Lots more durable.

I start with the sand painted dark brown, work the highlights up then patches of static grass.

I have a tutorial that lines through it pretty quick and easy at jlbfigs.com/painting_tips.html

Where do you get static grass? The few hobby shops around where I live do not carry it.

cfielitz,

Try Games workshop or a model railway store.

Or Michael's, or Hobby Lobby.

Personally I'd suggest www.micro-mark.com then click on scenery then turf, foliage and grasses a large quart bottle for $9 compared to a quarter of that from GW for nearly the same price.

Thanks guys!

It's not rocket science, or hard. I don't know why eveyone has problems with static grass not standing up...

For large areas, put the grass in a Terrain Creations shaker bottle. For smaller areas, get a squeeze bottle with a nozzle. I have a small one I carry with my paint kit for instant basing.

1) Put drops of glue where you want the grass to go. Large or small areas can be covered.

2) Shake bottle carrying the static grass. This gets it charged and staticky. Then, squeeze/puff it out from the bottle over the glue. Don't worry about excess, it will shake off.

3) Let glue dry before shaking off grass. If yer smart, you did this over a piece of paper, so you can pour the excess back into the bottle.

No dabbing, pinching, etc, needed. Just shake and puff the grass out.

On finding GW style static grass.

Gw's grass is made in germany by NOCH. Rail model shops can order it for you. The $8 USD bag will fill a Terrain Creations shaker.

Dept 56, makers of themed ceramic villages, also have items suitable for terrain. Besides cheap plastic roads, trees, and resin painted walls, they also carry the GW style static grass! $10 USD gets a BIG bag of it. They get it from Germany too, and I think it's the same people who supply Noch and GW. It's the exact same stuff.

Dept 56 sometimes has stores in large malls, or sells through Hallmark style stores, and craft stores.

Check these guys out!

Do yourself a favor and pick up a couple of filter masks that painters use.

Static grass is made of very fine polyester threads cut into short pieces, and becomes airbord at the drop of a hat

I always had a nasty cough for a couple of hours after using this stuff, untill I started using a Mask

best for larger areas is the use of the NOCH Turbostat, basically a 12v hairdryer, which statically charges the grass and applies it to the PVA-coated terrain.

Yes - use a dust mask! Those airborne fibers are nasty!

And try this on a few bases:

Mix some static grass with your favorite normal flocking.

Mix a little green (or whatever) paint in with the PVA glue, and apply it liberally to most of the base.

Dip in the mix, shake gently, let dry a bit, then blow.

Take few small decorative rocks, using tweezer dip into the paint/glue mix and place around the base.

Nice effect, and you can do a whole bunch of units quickly, and they all match in color and style but each is unique.

Also, I like to match the base flocking with the flocking used on my battleboard - it looks great when your units bases match the terrain they are fighting on!

I second what Crusoe The Painter said. I bought 2 big bags of static grass at Hallmark for $1 USD USD each! By "big" I mean each bag was 2x8x6 inches and packed full to the point of being like a pillow. Hallmark is a greeting card/stationary/party supply store in the US, and around the holidays they often sell ceramic villages to go under the Christmas tree. I picked up these bags of flock a week or 2 after Christmas when all the stores are getting rid of their holiday surplus for bargain prices. The bags were unlabelled, but it seems likely that they were distributed by Dept. 56.

It certainly seems that Noch's static grass "Spring Meadow" matches GW's static grass perfectly, and is likely the supplier for GW. Noch even sells staic grass already glued onto mats, as does GW, but for 75% less than GW. A few places I've found online:
