A write up of the first outing for my FPW armies using Neil Thomas' 19thC rules. Previously I'd been using Black Powder for this period and been very impressed but wanted to give these a go based on some positive comments.

Alistair – we will have to have a game at some point – either my 28mm setup or your 6mm…

I really like the rules having played a few games now and think they are very well designed with some clever mechanisms.

Thanks, I know in his other books, his units are each formed from 4 bases (with 8 units in total in play) – looking at your pictures I assume that your 6mm are based onto 60 x 30 bases (as mine are) – did you use 4 of those bases to form 1 unit?

Norm… Well spotted. They are indeed based on 60 x30 bases: I used the Baccus bases and had thought to use their Polemos rules but could never get to grips with them. I used 2 bases to form a unit in order to make the bases stretch further. I used casualty markers to note when a base should have been removed which seemed to work ok.

Mike… Happy to have a game some time… I'll drop you an email.

Thanks for the report and thoughts, Alastair … locally we play a mix of rules for 19th cent. games including BP, NT and Peter Pig's ACW …

I think Neil gets a lot of the basics right, but it remains quite simple (which either is a blessing or an invitation to modify, depending on your taste – but also how frequently you play I think).

I hope you will post more links as and when you update

Phil
