The latest scenario book for Fireball Forward: Tactical World War Two Rules is set for release at Cold Wars 2013! ‘Marines at Guadalcanal' contains 14 historical scenarios following the three main Japanese offensives to recapture Henderson Field. The mini-campaigns break the action down into: The Battle of the Tenaru, The Battle for Bloody Ridge and the October Offensive. Desperate Marines try to repel determined Imperial soldiers launching vicious Banzai charges. Some scenarios feature heros like John Basalone and Mitchell Page.

You can get a sneak peak at some of Jerry Frazee's excellent illustrations for the book here:

Are these scenarios compatible with the "scope" of Flames of War, i.e. you are a company commander with a fairy godmother at Division?

mfastoso28 Jan 2013 10:22 a.m. PST

Yes. These scenarios are company level. Each playing piece is a squad, weapons team or leader (Platoon or Company Leader.) One vehicle model represents one vehicle. It is the same at the old Squad Leader game by Avalon Hill.

John-
I have followed Mark's game through development and test plays at game cons. Your FOW basing of units and vehicles would translate well to his game. As he mentioned, go to his site as there is a intro version of the rules and a scenario or two to take for a test drive.

I'm excited. My Marines and Japanese will finally get a real workout.
Mark, Any unique or unusual weapons I'll need for any of the scenarios? How about terrain? I'm sure I'll need more jungle, anything else?

You will need 6 Chi-Ha 97B Japanese tanks, 4 Stuarts and 1 M3 Motor Gun Carriage. Other than that lots of Japanese! (6 platoons of 3 squads and 1 heavy squad.) 4 machine gun teams, one Color Bearer, assorted company and battalion leaders and a couple of snipers. USMC need 4 platoons of the same plus one machine gun team per platoon and a lt mortar platoon of 3 lt mortar teams.

For terrain you will need jungle (which is divided into 4-inch jungle zones, palm trees, a few hills, 4 huts and a river.

It is a real fun set of scenarios. Se played each one several times and now that we are done the guys are sad that it is over. They just love the Banzai charges!

I played one of the Guadalcanal scenarios at Fall-In (scroll down). Really well balanced, lots of tricky decisions, and tons of fun. Looking forward to the new book!
