Hello, I was looking over the Dragon Kings range from Black Hat, thinking about what I might do with them when the accompanying rules finally come out from Ganesha, when I began to think that some of them might sort of do double duty as Four Monarchs or Thorns of the Lotus figures from the Feng Shui RPG (Atlas Games). By way of background, the setting is there is a trans-termporal "Netherworld" that links different time periods together, and occasionally it shifts, trapping some people in the Netherworld and causing changes in history that only get noticed by those who've been in the Netherworld. The current time periods are 69 AD, 1850, 1996, and 2056, and there are different levels of magic in those periods, as well as tech, so the game includes wuxia, kung fu, black powder weapons, modern weapons, cyborg tech, and magic. Any ideas on a set of rules that could handle all that on the tabletop with miniatures? The FS rules themselves are great for RPGing, but a bit loose (IMHO) for the tabletop. 7TV or .45 Adventure seem like they might work for parts, but wuxia and magic may not be covered by them. I'm looking at small skirmishes, say 4-12 characters total, plus mooks. I haven't really re-read anything from the canon yet (I have the entire collection, so it's a month's worth of reading), but what I have below is where I'm starting from for minis (25/28mm). Four Monarchs – Dragon Kings plus some modern tech. Dragons – fit into the time period. Eaters of the Lotus – Dragon Kings plus Han Chinese. Architects of the Flesh – various cyborgs and near-future tech. Ascended – fit into the period (humans). Guiding Hand – MegaMinis kung fu, Dragon Kings monks. Jammers – couple of Reaper figures for Furious George etc. (but would love more!), Eureka's apes with guns, some other cyborgs or post-apoc type figs will do. I love the Jammers – Orangotank, Battlechimp Potemkin, Funky Monkey, Chimpanzer, etc. Having said that, are there any sources for modern Hong Kong movie-type figures? The fallback is to paint some white guys as Asian. More kung fu options would be nice too. Chris |

If you can find them, Stone Circle Games made a whole range of figs for their Chinatown game that would be very suitable for Feng Shui/Shadowfist. Long OOP and kind of rare these days, unfortunately – which is a real pity, since they even had a lot of weirdness that would help with Architects and Eaters forces. Many Shadowrun (and other cyberpunkish) figs would work for Syndicate (the Shadowfist faction that critical-shifted the Architects out of power) and as the more human Jammers – they aren't all monkeys, after all. Four Monarchs are wildly varied depending on which Pagoda you're looking at – anything from historicals (Aztecs, Vikings, European knights, etc) to fantasy adventurer types and lots of animals, mythological and otherwise. Eaters of the Lotus use lots and lots of demons, as well as a smattering of other mythological Chinese critters. Architects of the flesh could use Strain models from Sedition Wars as abominations. I'd advise browsing through teh Superfigs range at Old Glory for more ideas – the henchmen packs are very cheap and offer plenty of possibilities, as do some of the individual hero/villain packs. There are even a few cyber-ape types. |

Had an epiphany a few hours ago, I think Blasters and Bulkheads would work for rules. Essence = chi, more of less, and is used by sorcerers and kung fu masters, with house rules limiting what essence powers they get respectively. Essence blades are any magic weapons, blasters are modern guns, some house rules for muskets. Some alien races get used as demons, and robots and cyborgs are self-explanatory. Hmmm, working on more notes now, am on a roll. |

You might take a look at Goalsystem Delves as well for more ideas. The magic there is more D&D-styled, but some of it could still be useful for Four Monarch & Eaters of the Lotus spellslingers. The monster design system is probably compatible enough with B&B to be handy as well. |
