….. of possible nuclear attack:

'Officials in Indian-controlled Kashmir are warning residents to be prepared for a possible nuclear war by building build bomb-proof basements and collecting two weeks' worth of food and water.

Local officials said the advisory was routine, though it was the first time it had been published in a newspaper. They said it did not signal new concerns about a nuclear attack in the region, repeatedly fought over by nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan.'

Routine but first time it had been published in a newspaper?

Sure. Nothing more routine than nuclear attack warnings.

Used to practice duck and cover drills as a kid, though it wouldn't have really done any good.

Within probably-miss ground zero of those big, nasty, Soviet missiles, being near the major air and naval base when I was growing up.

They'll get used to it.

Why do I get the feeling there is a Hitchhiker's Guide fan who works for the Indian Civil Defenese?

"There's no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you've had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it's far too late to start making a fuss about it now. … What do you mean you've never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for heaven's sake, mankind, it's only four light years away, you know. I'm sorry, but if you can't be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that's your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams."

"Nothing more routine than nuclear attack warnings."

It is hardly Attack Warning Red, just civil defence advice, which it is usually fairly easy to poke fun at.

They said it did not signal new concerns about a nuclear attack in the region …

Indeed. The last new concern was when the Pakistanis got a bomb, and this is just a re-iteration of smart survival planning.

Unlike a US/Soviet exchange, there's a pretty good chance of survival and dealing with fallout.

EDIT: It might also be worth remembering that some Chinese nukes are probably pointed at India, too.

They want to warn them alright.
Warn them that making mild curry with coconut is some weak sauce (literally).

Madras… now that's where it's at.
