Hello
Got the first of my Chilean ironclads for the 1879 war of the pacific finished off today, the models are from the tumbling dice range 1:2400. We have Cochrane and Blanco Encalada and the corvette Chacabuco.I'm really enjoying painting and rigging these ships, so much so I went out and ordered the early British ironclads can't wait to have a go with the massive ships.
I'm still not entirely shore what rules to use with them though. I'm looking at iron and fire currently, I want a set that's above all fun to play preferably with some stats for European, British and South American ships readily available. So if anybody has any suggestions I'm open to hearing them.

Iron and Fire should have all you need :)

Stunning work – those flags/ensigns really bring them to life – and the rigging – wow!

Seconding Mr Manley's suggestion of Iron and Fire….

Great stuff – thanks for sharing. I'm also working on building up Chilean and Peruvian navies for War of the Pacific from TD – put me firmly with the Iron and Fire camp as well!

May I ask which miniatures form the TD line you're using to represent the other ships like union and Esmeralda?

Hi Ben,
Thanks for this thread – its got this project back on the bench for me!

I've been fairly haphazard with my research for this – I have found SteelonSand's blog a really helpful resource – in part because it covers TD minis: link (there may be better posts to link to but this is a start)

Regarding the Esmerelda and the Union – I'm just using TD screw corvettes at this stage unless a better options comes up.

Looking forward to seeing more of your project.

By the way, what are you using for your mat? Its looking great.

Having spent the evening working through what information I can find, the problem with using the Tumbling Dice screw corvettes (ASV15 Screw Corvette) for the Esmerelda is they are gaff rigged and the Esmerelda was brigantine rigged (square rigged). So its looking like a conversion is required.

Glad I got your project rolling again :)

Thanks for the link and the research its realy helpful, there's also a good book I'm thinking you would have seen called "THE ROYAL NAVY AND THE PERUVIAN-CHILEAN WAR 1879 – 1881"
I'm pretty much using the same TD ships for them but as you say I might do some conversions on their sail plan to make them look more like the real ships, not sure yet.

The board is homemade I'm going to do a how to at some point when I get the time. its basically a board stippled with a mix of copidex glue and black acrylic to get the texture then Dark Blue gloss tile paint followed by dry brushing and a wash of black to blend the dry brushing.
