As part of their History topic for year 8 at my school I organised the Battle of Naseby for the children to play. Please see below a link to an account of the two games played with a total of 46 participants

I wish there had been lessons like that when I was at school!
During my own teaching career I devised an ECW battle game in which each pupil commanded a regiment of Foot or Horse and selected their orders each turn from a set of cards bearing appropriate commands – Form Stand of Pikes; Double Your Files; Fall On Pell Mell &c. – which produced some entertaining games that demonstrated just how hard it was to manoeuvre unweildy blocks of men. One colonel confused left and right in the heat of battle and charged off the table; another opened fire on friendly troops to his front.

Hey:

Good on you!

Did that once for the battle of Champion's Hill. Confederates still lost, but won us two new members. Some young ones still want to be historic war-gamers, without "War-Hammer" pyrotechnics.
