Seems to be becoming flavour of the month around here: link There are some (ahem!) venerable figures in there, bendy lances and all. Still, I managed to get the game up and running within a few weeks' preparation time.

I've done this one so many times. Your game looks about right. Lots of minis! That is always fun. In one of our refights, the English players did the same thing that you describe: put light javelin chuckers out in front; additionally, they held all the Huskarl units in the rear in reserve. The fyrd held the main line. The "skirmishers" had a good time and basically won the battle by having extra good dice, both throwing and morale; while the Normans in the center had abysmal luck and routed at the first hint of heavy casualties. That game was all good luck on the English side, bad luck on the Norman side; very unhistorical in that respect; but if that is how the real battle had actually gone, we would all be saying, "Wow, what a historical outcome!". A good set of rules allows a historicl outcome on the right terrain using the right tactics; it does not require a historical outcome every time

Thanks for looking, folks, and for the positive comments. I agree with the Great War Ace – a refight doesn't have to be a strict replay. I like the idea of trying to get the mix to 'feel' right, with a reasonable stab at a historical order of battle and deployment, but then what the players do with it is up to them
Cheers again!

Sterling service by those Prince August homecast spearmen in the Saxon ranks there! We do a lot of games with cooperating players versus reaction-driven opposition at our club. It works well – 'expected' reactions feel historically authentic, and the occasional 'freak roll' just feels like an aggressive or rash enemy trying something unexpected. |
