I was looking for a mat to use for a smaller air combat game using Nightfighters. I couldn't find anything I really liked so I was tempted, at one stage, to try and make my own. Tempted, was as far as it went as I had enough problems putting the downtown game together. So
I used Pendraken's minibits service to get them cut some tiles with etched hexes.
Why didn't I go down this route before ? These fit in a consistent manner. MDF takes paint so much easier than felt for custom details and can be scaleable for what every game system or scenario. Is this something that people have considered for SF and Modern gaming? Regards Si |

How tight a fit are they? |

Just like Heroscape. But paint-able to your own needs. I like it. Air combat or Space combat you're covered. 8) |

That's fantastic! Those would be great for more than just SF and Modern gaming. I can see using them for TFT and other skirmish games that use hexes for movement. |

Hi Si. Any chance you could give a rough estimate of the cost for what ou bought. Mick |

Is a great idea. I would like to get some of these too. Easy to make modular terrain with various features paint on. Please tell us the cost of each tile which I assume Are about 4 x 6 hexes? I can see these done in 1 inch hexes, for figures that are mounted on 3/4 or 1 inch squares. |

I've been trying to figure out how to cut my own hexes from mdf. Finally have a plan, just need the time to do it (less rain would also help). Just not sure how many gaps between the hexes I'll end up with. |

Good to see they arrived quickly, and glad you liked them! These ones were 38mm Hex's, arranged 4x6 Hex's per tile, and we did them for £2.00 GBP per tile as a custom job. If anyone else would be interested in these, or something similar, drop me an email through the website: minibits.net Cheers! |

Yep these were a custom job for specifc idea (including the hex layout on each tile). Cost me £36.00 GBP for this lot which was 18 tiles with individual etching on each tile. They were a specific size which equates to 1 1/2" hexes or there abouts. |

You could have had a felt mat with 1.5" hexes on for less: link |

I couldn't find anything I really liked There were lots of good hex mats out there but none of which offered the flexibility of what I wanted to be able to do. Swop marked sections in and out as needed (my "tiles" will have different information on them). I had already spent considerable time re-painting traditional felt mats to know that was something I didn't want to do again link The unit cost appears high but I wanted tiles, with frames in a specific pattern that I can then add other detail to. Otherwise I agree a standard felt mat might well have sufficied. |

£2.00 GBP per tile (6x4 '38mm' hexes) is super tempting .. |

Will be very interested to see them painted up and hear how you do it too. |

That is a great idea. Would be interested in some for my 3mm land stuff. |

Base coat applied (left over Fenris Grey which i still have enought of). link Some simple ideas forming about the next couple of tiles such as Pacific Islands and a US Navy Task Force viewed from above. |

@CAG19: I was just about to email you to see how this project was getting on, as I'm thinking about getting some from Leon myself .. :) Did you have to prime the MDF tiles first ?? And what about the inner hex "borders/edges" etching .. is that still easily distinguishable after applying the base coat ?? |

I normally do both sides of MDF to prevent the warping/tightening that adding paint to wood induces. For this project that will be black to fit the "theme" of the project. You can see the hex edgeing quite clearly even after the base coat. The engaving is quite deep. Leon has indicated that the depth of the engraving can be increased |
