Piers Morgan in his show was throwing up a straw man argument about the 2nd Amendment about does it cover having a tank.
YouTube link
But I'm here to prove if we could what would you want? Let's say you won a gazillion dollar lottery and after everything else you bought still have money to roll in.
Make mine a Pzkw MkII Austf C, it would be cool to run to the grocery store in winter and would fit in my garage.

Meiczyslaw17 Jan 2013 4:38 p.m. PST

Does mine come with Japanese schoolgirls to man it?

evil grin

And I don't see why you shouldn't have a tank. I have a co-worker who's got a cannon.

Dynaman878917 Jan 2013 4:39 p.m. PST

But it's not a straw man argument.

doc mcb17 Jan 2013 4:40 p.m. PST

"Tank" is probably as hard to define as "assault rifle." If you put a Brinks armored car/truck on caterpiller treads, that would be sort of a tank, wouldn't it? And plenty of armored cars and bulldozers are privately owned.

Only Warlock17 Jan 2013 4:45 p.m. PST

It's not a Straw Man argument, it's a Douchebag Man Argument.

Rrobbyrobot17 Jan 2013 4:49 p.m. PST

I want an M3A1, or an M24. Either would look, like, waaay cool in my yard. I could also drive it down the main street of our little town in the Christmas Parade with my American Legion buddies riding along.

Meiczyslaw17 Jan 2013 4:52 p.m. PST

But it's not a straw man argument.

A straw man or straw person … is a type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

Honestly, the most serious 2nd Amendment argument that I've heard is that members the Unorganized Militia (see Section 311 of US Code Title 10) should have access to the same arms that any light infantry soldier would.

Ken Portner17 Jan 2013 4:53 p.m. PST

Does Ferrari make a tank? I'll take one of those.

Pizzagrenadier17 Jan 2013 5:03 p.m. PST

Either a panzer IV H, a puma (yeah yeah, I know none exist), or an M8 Greyhound.

If not available, I'll just take a Hotchkiss. I'm not picky about what kind :)

Altius17 Jan 2013 5:25 p.m. PST

I don't know much about Piers Morgan. I really haven't seen very much of his show at all. But I thought the recent "interview" with Alex Jones was pure comedy gold.

I'll take an FT-17. Sure, it's a clankety little thing, but it's a classic.

Is that thing supposed to be a boat with treads?

MAD MIKE17 Jan 2013 5:44 p.m. PST

Scimitar. Fast, good off-road and the 30mm would be just the ticket for elephant hunting. grin

14Bore Supporting Member of TMP17 Jan 2013 5:51 p.m. PST

So far so good. If I got the straw man thing right is not the point. No one publicly was screeming a tank was covered by the 2nd. My point is this crowd would if they could.
P.S. a 20mm rapid fire cannon would come in handy I'm sure.

PiersBrand17 Jan 2013 5:55 p.m. PST

I never said nothing of the sort…

Endless Grubs17 Jan 2013 6:22 p.m. PST

BA-10 with a grass catcher. . . .

Glengarry517 Jan 2013 6:37 p.m. PST

But people do collect tanks, I've seen them on TV! I imagine there are restrictions on functional weapons?

Glengarry517 Jan 2013 6:38 p.m. PST

A friend of mine was looking into buying a FT-17, but now hw plans to build one.

Irish Marine17 Jan 2013 6:53 p.m. PST

This is a interesting question am I restricted to WW2 or can it be a little more modern.

Timbo W17 Jan 2013 7:15 p.m. PST

Old armoured cars can be bought pretty cheaply, iirc one of the UK techno bands used to have a dayglo Humber pig. Certainly I've seen a Ferret scout car on sale at a garage forecourt!

jgawne17 Jan 2013 7:23 p.m. PST

Tanks are a major pain in the but due to maintenance issues. I know people that own them. Normally one assumes an hour of maintenance to hour of operation.

Also, you generally cannot run on regular roads with metal tracks, so that makes it hard to go anywhere in one- which is why most tank owners also have a transporter. (more hassle)

actually, there is no problem own in tank, it's just the main weapons that have to be demilled. which is pretty useless as the actual problem is getting live ammo for one. live rounds are quite rare, and it's not the kind of thing that you can reload or maake in a garage.

By the way, I support deprting Piers, not becasue of his 2nd amendment attacks, but becasue he is just a lousey interviewer.

Stosstruppen17 Jan 2013 7:32 p.m. PST

A Hetzer would be fun

Artraccoon17 Jan 2013 7:34 p.m. PST

Leopard 2A6 for me, but if I'm going for a "classic" then make it a Stuart.

darthfozzywig17 Jan 2013 8:41 p.m. PST

Does Ferrari make a tank? I'll take one of those.

Not, but Porsche made one back in the 40s I hear.

Kaoschallenged17 Jan 2013 8:54 p.m. PST

Porsche only designed tanks…

Personally an M48 or M60, my favorite tanks. Though an M3/M5 Stuart wouldn't be too off, and can be made street legal!

Damon.

skippy000117 Jan 2013 10:33 p.m. PST

In the US, I believe you can acquire military vehicles that are not in the current inventory of the armed forces. So legally(after jumping through lawyer/Fed hoops with bags of money) you can own a T-62 but not a Stryker afv.
I also read you can by 2 dozen russian tanks but Homeland Security won't let you ship them to the US.

And tracks will rip up the roads and you have bridge-crossing problems-wheeled afv's are the way to go.

So, a Centauro and some Cadillac Gage V150's might just do.

And Wiesels, even though tracked should be light enough for those 'Fast, Furious and Firepower' moments.

Cerdic18 Jan 2013 12:55 a.m. PST

He's got a tank. About 5:45 in….

And here, about 3:40 in…

I know someone who owned an Abbot SPG. It's not the vehicle it's the big shooty thing coming out the front that's the problem.

Cuchulainn18 Jan 2013 3:43 a.m. PST

I'll settle on a Chaffee. Very useful for getting through the traffic during rush hour.

"…you generally cannot run on regular roads with metal tracks"

Maybe according to the book, but who's really gonna stop you? :-)

captainquirk18 Jan 2013 5:25 a.m. PST

>I know someone who owned an Abbot SPG. It's not the vehicle it's >the big shooty thing coming out the front that's the problem.

If it was the one that was yellow and had three figures of pigs in police uniforms on the hull, I've been in a car when that Abbot pulled up alongside at the traffic lights. It was quite intimidating being next to something with that much mass and the ability to crush any normal road vehicle.

vaughan18 Jan 2013 5:43 a.m. PST

Last I saw it was still in its proper colours. You used to commonly see them for sale in the back of Autotrader or similar.

Katzbalger18 Jan 2013 6:23 a.m. PST

While not technically tanks, I'd like an M8 Greyhound, Ferret, or Cadillac-Gage V100. I just love armored cars.

I think the Churchill Mk VII Crocodile would be nice. A bit slow, but whose going to argue with you when you can blow them up, machine gun them and immolate them. Rush-hour would be the best time of day as you crush, blast, pepper and incinerate your way to work and back. And if Mr. Morgan objects, the word flambé comes to mind. It's hard to debate when you're on fire. A bit sociopathic perhaps, but I think it would get people's minds off school-shootings.

"does it cover having a tank. "

The Founders never defined "arms." They never said whether that meant muskets, cannons, and swords… or just muskets and swords, but not cannons. As with so many things, they left those definitions up to us.

But I'll bet that old George Washington was glad that the Whiskey Rebels, or Shay's rebels, or Fries' rebels, were not better-equipped, and thus not better-able to resist the power of (his) government!

Swampster18 Jan 2013 7:59 a.m. PST

Surely it'd have to be a Grizzly APC or Brumbaer. It is the right to _bear_ arms after all.

Rod I Robertson18 Jan 2013 8:02 a.m. PST

Swampster:
Groan. If you can possess bear arms can you have bear claws too?
Rod Robertson

elsyrsyn18 Jan 2013 8:07 a.m. PST

Personally, I'm concerned about my constitutional right to arm bears.

M-18 Hellcat is at the top of my list of "non critical things to buy with my lottery winnings".

Plus any of a dozen different armored cars to use for commuting.

Only Warlock18 Jan 2013 9:18 a.m. PST

Meiczyslaw that was a Soviet Cold War experimental Heavy Tank designed (Via its shape) to defeat Blast Wave pressures from a Nearby Nuke Strike and roll through the Mushroom Cloud! the Fuel tanks are in the cells between the treads!

Tommy2018 Jan 2013 11:17 a.m. PST

If money truly was no object, I'd buy a Firefly and a couple of Shermans (plus associated transporters, etc…) and start my own reenactment unit.

If we're just talking about winning an average lottery, my first purchase would be a Dingo or Daimler AC (or maybe both).

I know of at least one Stuart with an operational 37mm. I could have busted a cap for $75 USD

Though not a tank, I can certainly picture myself loading the family up in that BTR-60 for a weekend in the country.

captainquirk18 Jan 2013 2:25 p.m. PST

I remember some years back when a Scorpion light tank shed a track on the highway… slewed across the road into the opposing traffic lane and went straight over an oncoming car. "Light" tank is a very relative term.

Sargonarhes18 Jan 2013 2:50 p.m. PST

If I have the money to buy any weapon I could by what the 2nd Amendment allows I'd want a Apache attack helicopter. Then I'd need to learn how to fly the thing.

For tanks I'd want a Leopard II.

And about Piers Morgan. I don't think Jeremy Clarkson hit him nearly hard enough.

14Bore Supporting Member of TMP18 Jan 2013 3:51 p.m. PST

Irish Marine – it's your dream money get what you want.
Patrick Sexton- You could keep up on a highway with that.
Sargonarhes – Piers reads this in his next 2nd argument he'll bring up people wanting attack helicopters.

Norman D Landings18 Jan 2013 4:06 p.m. PST

Well, there's lots of other military vehicles I'd rather have, but the OP says 'tank', so:

Everyday use: Alvis FV101 Scorpion, thanks.

Small and nippy, and the rubber-padded tracks mean you don't tear up the road surface.
I'd want some work done on the plastic fuel tank, though.

Sunday best: I suppose a Panther's the one, innit?
Everybody seems to go wobbly-legged for them, and you'd get plenty of film work.

Also under consideration: Centurion, or Swedish S-tank.

(Edited to add)

I considered a ZBD2000 for the watersports potential… but God, it's ugly. I don't want that parked outside my house.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER18 Jan 2013 8:19 p.m. PST

When I was in Va in the late 70s, there was an M8 that somebody drove about town in Virginia Beach.

Wellspring30 Mar 2013 7:46 p.m. PST

A friend of mine owns several military armored cars. It's never been a problem and he's a big hit when he drives them to cons. A local DA once tried to take him on (trying to creatively interpret a local ordinance about commercial vehicles) but got slapped down by the judiciary.

It's never seemed to me to be a problem. I'd love to buy a Fox armored car. They just look sexy.
