"Naval Book Source Needed" Topic

To help me sort out all the ship types during the ancient period, I was hoping there might be a book that tells me what "nation" used what ship during what period. Does such a thing exist? In looking over Langton's list of 1/1200 ancient ships, I'll be darned if I know when these various types of ships were used, by whom they were used, and during what period they were used.

The rules I have are the old Greek Naval Warfare published by the London Wargames Section. In those rules ships are of five types (pentaconter, bireme, trireme, quadrieme, and quinquereme). Obviously there are a lot of other types that Langton sells.

I am not wedded to using the Greek Naval Warfare rules, but after reading through them a few times I do seem to like them. Reminds me a bit of Wooden Ships and Iron Men.

Anyway, I digress…the bottom line is that I would like to find a book that details the various types of ships and who used them during what period.

warfleets of antiquity by R.B.Nelson, WRG, 1973 would be a good start.

Conways History of the Ship Series, The Age of the Galley would be a good one as well.

Try the Society of Ancients – they do a set of rules called Corvus (about £5.00 GBP plus P&P I think). They have representative fleet lists for a few periods and combattants, they also have a biblio.

Rules are good in the sense that they give an enjoyable game. They are more towards Hollywood than history in some respects but very playable.

The old LWS rules are fine, simple and quick.

If you're not wedded to models you could look at some coloured ship counters here …

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. I have priced out War Fleets of Antiquity…a bit more than I want to spend at this point.

The Conway book is a bit more than I want to spend as well, just to get some basic info.

I have, however, ordered Corvus today, so hopefully that will help a bit.

Looks like I am leaning towards early period Greek naval gaming, which probably means pentaconters vs. anything else, from what I can gather thus far.

Yesterday went to library and asked for War Fleets of Antiquity
with inter-library loan see what happens in a few week.

This work would seem to have the information for my Successor's campaign naval side.
