Some might enjoy this? To quote the King of Siam – it is a puzzlement!? I buy a copy of the new WWII Rules, Battle Group Kursk – they look excellent, read really smoothly and are gathering some wonderful reviews. I figure I'll join some specific on-line resources to help with learning to play them and to become a contributor/supporter leveraging my large library of WWII Eastern Front material. Hunting around I find it seems something called The Guild is the Forum to be in so I find it and go to Register. You fill in the Registration page and then the last question – a security check – requires you to trash your work and go back to the previous Index page and find a line in small type and then describe it correctly. No problem with that, minor annoyance at losing all the entered material but its for security so no biggie
but here's the thing
the question is to name the War that is entered in the tiny green type. The type says 1914 – 1918 so I enter "First World War" and hit enter – wrong! So I try "The Great War"
wrong! So I enter "World War I"
also wrong and then I'm informed that I've failed with 3 bad answers and cant try again for a period of time. Obviously I'm not clever enough to join The Guild. No biggie, I go across to Yahoo Groups and join the secure Battle Group Kursk Forum there without difficulty. But I am puzzled – anybody got any ideas as to what other answer I could give to "1914 – 1918" than "First World War", The Great War" or World War I"? Sure it started with a declaration of war by the Austro-Hungarians on Serbia but it escalated so quickly I've never heard it referred to separately as the "Austro-Serbian War"? What am I missing? Amusing. Nick |

Maybe the answer they are looking for is "1914-1918"? Isn't it just a step in the registration process to prevent spamming so all you have to do is type what you see? |

If I told you, they would kill me. Honestly, I joined years ago before all the security stuff. This really is a funny puzzler. |

"the last question – a security check – requires you to trash your work and go back to the previous Index page" Or, you could just open a new browser window or a new tab. |

Gee, I thought it was just me. I have been a member there for awhile. However, I haven't visited for several weeks (months?) due to a busy life. I tried to log in last night but was rejected. I just figured they purged my account because of inactivity. So I went through the registration (re-registration?) process only to go through the same problems that nsolomon99 encountered. I too thought about entering "1914-1918" but since it specifically asked for the name of the war, I assumed they specifically wanted the name of the war, not the dates. After all that I hit the Administrator link and it went nowhere. I too went elsewhere

The anti-computer faction has really started to go overboard with keeping computers and spam bots out of their forums. I'm suprised they didn't hang a sign out front that said, "humans only", or "bots need not apply". I look forward to the day when we can judge a forum member by the content of his character and not the chrome of his case. On a serious note, I don't think web site designers realize how annoying their anti-spam measures are, and they could be so much simpler. |

1st World War And yes, those silly, anti-spam measures are a pain, and pretty worthless in my book too, if a human is involved in the process. Better to zap them, as they pop up. |

In their defense, I started a forum (badly) and was attracting 50-75 spammers a day. It took half an hour to delete them all
.and if I missed a few days
.sheesh. |

I typed WW1 and it got accepted immediatly. BTW, you don't have to trash your entire form, just open a new tab for the frontpage |

Thanks gents WW1 does the trick. Now I just have to wait for the Moderators to read an email. |

I think you're very clever Nick .. but I'm Not sure why ''the guild'' refers to TMP as PMT . |

Many British gaming sites do. It's their abbreviation for women's problems, and often very apt. 8)= |

I always think it's funny when people moan about anti-spam measures when joining a forum. I'm sure they would moan so much more when every thread in a forum contained a message generated by a spam bot there is a reason why anti spam measures are used it's to keep spammers out and it really is an arms race as spammers up the intelligence of the spambots they use and software developers try to counter the new threats Mike |

My only problem with anti spam measures are those words written in wonky writing in some odd colour that you are supposed to copy into a text box. A spambot might not be able to read them problem is half the time niether can I

Earthdog- Thanks, I tried World War One, World War 1, First World War and a few other variations. I did not think of or try WW1. |

It might be a pain but as a lurker , I havn't seen any attacks by spam on the Guild site. So from that point of view it is working .The Warlord site of which I also view from time to time does get attacked frequently hence one of the reasons they have doubled their mods . |
