Happy New Year everyone!! I like to play DBR but I'd like to use round bases rather than the generals being based as other elements. I'm wondering what I should include on the command base. Would there be an entourage that would follow him around, body guards, staff officers, hangers on, dogs? Did the generals move around much during a battle? Would a commander of horse lead a charge with a unit or would he be right out in front with his personal followers? Would they be mounted the whole time? Would commanders usually have a personal standard bearer with them? So many questions!!! Thank you. |

Would there be an entourage that would follow him around, body guards, staff officers, hangers on, dogs? The King had a personal lifeguard. Prince Rupert had his dog, Boy. Did the generals move around much during a battle? Some did, e.g. Cromwell at Marston Moor. Would a commander of horse lead a charge with a unit or would he be right out in front with his personal followers? Depends. Would they be mounted the whole time? Not necessarily. Would commanders usually have a personal standard bearer with them? If a commander owned the right to heraldic arms then possibly. |

At Naseby Skippon was sufficiently amongst it with his infantry to get shot, and the nature of the wound (sort of hip to shoulder) shows he was up on his horse
Fairfax was sufficiently engaged to lose his helmet, and is seemingly in more than one place
These days, I think we assume that Rupert started the battle alongside the King, but moved across to the right to manage that wing more closely (Marix Evans doubts, however, that he got right around to the celebrated skirmish with the artillery train in the Parliamentarian rear – but it is unlikely the tale would get currency if such extensive roving was unheard of
)
So I think it is fair to assume that they command from horseback and move around within the general area of command assigned to them

Thanks -it feels like there should be less figures rather than more on a generals base -certainly not a huge mob of staff officers etc like Wellington. Maybe he would be accompanied by a couple of retainers or similar. Nice link Phil -I like what you've done with your chaps. |

I have no experience with DBR. So I don't know if it really matters. I don't care what any rules say, I already mount my officers on round stands to differentiate them from the troop stands. I mount three figures for the big guy, two for wing cmdrs, etc. and one for lesser Generals and Colonels. |

Thanks, mashrewba
I'm for round bases, too – but (as on the blog) went with square because I wanted to fix the commander's name on the base and wasn't convinced I'd be able to get the curvature right to do that to a bevel sided round one* Phil *I have been advised this is easier than I'd thought – but I've gone with the squares and they have served me well. |
